So I'm working on a casemod for this spare Wii motherboard to raise a bit of money for myself. The original casing broke, as did the DVD drive. So far I've spent about $45 on legos for this, as well as another $10 for a de-soldering iron. The majority of the legos I have are still in my unused bucket, so I'm keeping a lot of the stuff I bought already.

So, here's what I have so far.

Used a 32x32 base board which will be cut down to size when finished. Will likely remove some of the plain clear bricks in favor of some orange flat singles, because I hope to be able to use these for internal lighting. They should fluoresce like a mofo in there. I'd also want to use some LED's to replace the ones found inside the DVD slot.

Heatsink hood removed. I'm going to revise the front of the hood portion to allow for better air flow, as well as enhance the aesthetics a bit.

Here are some of my concerns. First, I can't reach any of the buttons. I'll have to create a way to access them, perhaps by making a small switch bar that is hand-wired and soldered to the original switches. There's four total. Secondly, I'd need to make sure that there isn't too much overhead power loss from the cathode inverters, which draw ~3.7 watts. I should be okay there since there isn't a DVD drive at all. Thirdly, since the lamps are UV, I'm concerned that the light might mess with the IC's. It seems like it should be OK though, since they're meant to go inside PC's. Most of these sound like minor issues anyway, so we'll see how it goes.

Questions, comments, or suggestions? I'd love to hear them!

Since this doesn't have the DVD drive, does it have to use a hard drive and run off of Homebrew isos and Wiiware rips?

Looks pretty rad.

I have seen the concept before with PC's, never with a Wii though.

All those LEGO game exploits come in handy for that, oddly enough.

But otherwise, Pretty much awesome.

Since you're messing with it's cooling, you should probably get something that can measure the temperature and then play something intensive for the Wii . Just in case.

Yeah, I've already put it through it's heating tests. It was relatively cool to the touch after running for a while. It did get warm, but nothing crazy or out of the ordinary.

And yeah, this one has to use a hard drive. I might just get a Class 6 SD card to shove in there and just load a few games off of it instead.

Hahah, wow! I think it's looking awesome so far :D. Man I haven't used legos in yeeaaars but I used to love 'em. If I ever got something like this first thing I'd play is my old Lego Starwars game.

Can't wait to see more updates :3

I would love to do something similar to this with my Wii, but I move it around a lot... I'd be afraid to break something in it, not to mention that it has all of its parts in working condition, so an application like this seems a bit infeasible.

That... And it's the special edition red from Christmastime 2010, and I'd hate to not be using that case.

Well, I'll likely be selling it or auctioning it on ebay. However, I suspect it'll likely end up in the few hundreds of dollars. I dunno, we'll see.

When you do, be sure to let us know. I'm interested in having something like this, even if it's just for novelty purposes.

Sure thing. I hope to gain some exposure with some sites, such as Joystiq or Engadget or something. Though, they might not bite since it involves installing homebrew and backup leaders. (The drive is broken, and that is a legitimate reason to have such software.)

I'm glad my disc drive hasn't given up.. yet. Although, there are two Wiis to this household. Only one has been exposed to homebrew (mine).

Bad idea to mod it then. You should always use the version with the most mundane (common) casing as possible, unless there is hardware differences in some special models that might be useful. ;)

Once they start offering the new form factor Wii on its own (Without NSMBW, since I already have it), I may invest in one of them and mod the hell out of it. Keeping the red one in its original glory so that I can enjoy what little there is for online play.

Nothing yet. Still trying to figure out the best means for button access. I updated all the software on the Wii itself so it's all up to par now. That's really about it. I want to order those cathode tubes soon, though.

Edit: I also forgot to mention that games won't load off of the backup loader (from hard drive) because I assume it has to do with not being able to recognize or initialize the DVD drive. I might have to jury rig the drive mobo so that it can communicate with the Wii mobo. We'll see what comes of it.

Whatever happened with this? I'm still kinda curious to know.
