And ABXD is pretty much from scratch, for completion's sake.

you can combine board holes with php hole and get a whole new level of holy shit. :D

you fine sir are oh so witty

speaking of holes, I wonder how the memberlist pow hole made it into those exploit databases, considering how many similar holes exist without being covered

like, on vanilla AB1.92 you can become an admin, delete all the posts, or alter all the users

I think it did if I remember correctly. I think more people know about that that than use AB. heh :)

The only other board I know of that uses AB2.5 is some abandoned site which is overrun with spambots.

Well, there are also experiments at making the Jul codebase a little more customizable (read: bitmask groups and user-made forums).

And since those attempts are made by yours truly, it's probably never going to be finished. Especially when it's mostly on hold for something related to Wario Land of all things.

You may or may not be able to recognize where I stole this grid background from.

User made forums? Interesting. IIRC StapleButter used bitmasks for his perm system on his fork of AB2. It's a good way of doing things as it keeps things simple but opens it up more. (I went the overly complex route of course. :D)

Other than the main sites using AB it's hard to know who would be using it these days. We're in a 'new is good old is bad' mindset. I'm still hoping people will continue to push it forward as time moves on.

who would be using Acmlmboard these days, when it's all the opposite of hip and trendy?

heh.

maybe we will get big 'retro' waves from those who are sick of the modern 'constant flow of shit to consume' internet.

There's something about a vintage UI that just has a charm, you know.

Simplicity is bliss.

Acmlmboard software has way better capabilities than other forums (post layout, mood avatars, bio, etc) despite it's archaic look. I feel like there's definitely an appeal there, even if that appeal isn't very big.

Acmlmboard serves its niche very well.

Now, admittedly, half of its niche is made of people who are nostalgic for Acmlmboards, but hey, you could say the same about the Coca-Cola Company.

Well to be fair, there are more Coke (both kinds) enthusiasts than there are Acmlmboard enthusiasts. Indeed it does serve it's niche well.

I've heard this cycle described as "resume-driven development"... and I totally buy it

most experienced people on Acmlmboards have been around those boards for quite long. you rarely see newcomers (to acmlmboards in general) with much knowledge.. or newcomers not from other boards for that matter.

99% of signups on any acmlmboard are the same people anyway, it's very hard to grow a community outside ROM hacking or gaming with the software. a lot of people are put off by the old style for some reason, from what I've been able to tell.

Kids these days are all like, Ew. It's not like Twitter/Facebook. In fact, hang on. Let's fix that with a few stalker-styled ads.

For a lot of people that may be all they're looking for. Then again, the amount of people I know who are really unhappy with facebook and leave it entirely seems to be growing month by month.

Facebook and Twitter aren't the end all be all, and more people are accepting that.

What you have to remember about Twitter and Facebook is that these are giant corporations that are specifically hiring experts in human behavior and machine learning in order to make their products as addictive as possible, and attract as many users as possible.

That's a nice thing about small non-commercial message boards; we don't need to conquer the world, having a nice place for people to talk is plenty.

conquering the world means consume consume consume. they don't really want you to check old stuff and constantly shower you with new content. I wouldn't be surprised if they silently deleted old posts from people who post daily.
meanwhile we do the opposite, our boards archive all activity nicely.
