http://fiber.google.com/about

Google is becoming an ISP. They'll set up fiber optics in your home for a fee, and you'll apparently get 1000 MB/s. My current ISP barely gives me 2 MB/s, the idea of 1000 blows my fucking mind. Also, they're also offering free internet service, at the same speed of what you're already getting. All you gotta do is pay a one-time fee of 300 US Dollars to put fiber optics in your house, then free internet forever. But with 80 US Dollars a month, you get 1000 MB/s. Holy guacamole.

They only have it in Kansas City so far. Apparently they're setting it up based on who wants it the most. You can pre-register for 10 US dollars, so that when it comes to your city, you get the Fiber Optics upgrade for free and I believe the first month free. Even though I absolutely hate Google and think they're the devil, that is really REALLY hard to ignore.

What're your thoughts?

I have Verizon Fios, which is around 25 mbps here, and so far I've been happy with it :D

Anyone else remember that Google Tisp April Fool's joke from I think 2007? Back then I'd never have thought of Google launching an ISP ;)

I have a feeling this is going to be a crock of bullshit. I haven't read the article yet, but I'm just going off of what I know of many of the recent failures "Shits and Googles" has had in the past few years.

I just find this too hard to believe. Everyone doing the prepay so that Google can "decide who deserves rhe service next" is just gonna wind up getting fucked, big time. Those assholes are just going to pocket the money and laugh in everyone's faces.

Fuck Google.

Google does a lot of projects at the same time, so I wouldn't be quick to shoot it down. Some are failures (Google waves), others have it's fans but still have a mild reception (Google+) while others manages to be really successful (Gmail).

I'm kind of hoping Google succeeds with their endeavors into ISP space to put pressure into a increasingly stale market filled with Oligopoly. Of course, Google better not abuse their dominating position too much...

The fun part is that the sign ups for their first attempts at installing this is NEAR where I live but not quite to the point I'd benefit from this. They have this more downtown and it makes me a sad panda.

But yeah, I am hoping this puts pressure on ISPs and makes them at least work harder to not suck as much. Comcast doesn't seem to be dropping as much where I live so either they are trying harder to not suck and fear this or it is extremely coincidental.

I would like to see what the reviews are for the people who get it are. Mostly if they censor P2P at some point or if they keep it on the more open end. I am sure it will have IPv6 support (maybe not on right now but it will be needed). I also am curious if you get a static IPv4 IP as well?

Whether Google is successful or not, at least someone is attempting to get a neighborhood wide fiber going at a reasonable price. This should have happened 5 years ago in the US :P

I just heard from some family member that works for the company that they might actually expand for Johnson County soon eventually. If that's the case, I might be lucky and experience it being installed this year. Maybe. Maybe this spring. I am hoping around that time. And that word is making several of the ISPs in our area quite nervous. And nervous they should be because their service needs to step up because it is terrible. :(
