So I've been talking about Seattle's wage increase with a few people both off and online. Do you think this is a good thing, raising the minimum wage to $15 dollars or could this lead to problems down the road?

EDIT: because I said $11 and not $15.

I'd have to say a little bit of both... it'd be a good idea because of the rising cost of general goods/services and it would make living on one's own more affordable/reasonable; however, it could also be detrimental to small businesses who may not be able to afford such a sharp minimum wage increase

I want to say that it will be good and bad but in the long run, I don't think it will be good at all.

1. Cost will go up from food, clothes, living and so on. If you pay people more, the price of everyday goods will go up as well.
2. Companies might not be able to afford paying all if their employees $15 an hour. This will lead to layoffs.
3. Companies will not be able to hire more employees because they cannot afford to have them on staff (this links to #2).
4. If a company is able to keep all of their employees, they might be forced to cut hours. Some who work 40 hours a week at full time might find themselves in a part time position. Then insurance comes into play since some insurance companies won't cover you unless you work 35+ hours a week.

I'll say it's going to be quite mixed. That is quite a high minimum wage.

It's gonna be good for people, but it'll also be bad due to the knock-on effects. With people obtaining more income, why not raise prices, bills, etc?

If over here's any indication, bills will go up first.

Mostly good but some problems.

It's being phased in over (I believe) 7 years, it won't come overnight. So companies will get used to slowly paying their employees more. We need living wages, not some tiny pittance that won't even pay rent. So $15 is good.

But with corporate greed, they may still lay people off >_<

Note: I'm in Seattle and currently only make $11/hour.

The cost of living keeps going up, so it's only fair that minimum wage goes up to $15. No one can't live on $7 to $8 dollars anymore.

a very poor idea, it'll cause unemployment

seattle isn't a closed economy so it might not be properly reflected in the numbers (e.g. if a bunch of people who get laid off move away then employment % will go up) but it won't be beneficial for the people

it doesn't really make sense to talk about a "living wage" because that implies that the prices set by apartment landlords and grocery store chains should be something that's taken into account by other corporations when setting wage for their workers; the only thing that makes sense to me is to pay people precisely how much their work is worth, not more or less

obviously people still need things to eat and a roof over their heads, in which case you can take care of that with progressive income taxes and government aid, which is perfectly fine and reasonable, it's not like people actively want the poor to starve

it's just not sensible to set a minimum wage and to hope that that does the trick, the labor market is also, well, a market, and if you set a price floor then the quantity sold (i.e. the number of people hired) will go down just as it would for tomatoes or cds or w/e

that's obviously a simplification of the situation but it's still relatively valid

also i'm not sure it makes sense to say that some companies are greedy because all companies are greedy, at least the ones who survive; i mean the fundamental purpose of a corporation's existence is to facilitate collective money-making. it's not really a sensible complaint because desire for profit is literally the raison d'etre of companies.

that certainly doesn't mean that humanitarian policies are bad things, in fact i think it's pretty commonly accepted that for most industries it's very profitable in the long-run to treat your skilled workers well (with high wages, nice benefits, perks, so on and so forth) because they they're happier, making them more productive, and they also have less of a reason to leave. i just don't think it makes sense to criticize greed in companies.

A few companies here are starting to raise their minimum wage. It isn't a statewide mandate and I'm not sure if it'll ever get to that point here.

I think it's a good thing. There will be less people struggling to make a living on minimum-wage jobs.
