PHP-based forum software is everywhere. An AB2 written in PHP doesn't have much going for it over many of these packages, like FluxBB and even ABXD/Blargboard. It's more of the same, essentially.

You will have a wider potential audience - but how many of these users will realistically contribute to the AB2 ecosystem, either by contributing to the software (ideas, suggestions, patches, ...) or by maintaining a successful board? As StapleButter mentioned, RVLution (and Kuribo64) are the only Blargboard-based sites that ever actually went anywhere. Both of these could have been run as non-PHP apps as well.

On the other paw, not much exists in the way of forum software that isn't PHP. A high-quality and lightweight forum package in another language would fill a niche that's rather empty right now, and you may be able to attract contributors and users who would have not given this software a second look if it was just another PHP board.

Yeah. That's a good way of putting it. It's a 'less fish in the pond' syndrome. Being new it would attract people in a similar way Acmlm did with his board. It was very unique and filled the nitche that one could have a board without paying/pirating UBB/VBB.

Well I don't think we have to be revolutionary. A good product is all we need. Some small revolutionary accomplishments won't hurt of course. We'd still be writing forum software after all.

So Arisotura and I quickly started hashing out what Makes an Acmlmboard, and what we think we should look at from other boards.

Looks like templateing is built in to flask. I've just look at the first two pages of this as I am at work. Check it out!

Heh. The main reason I imported mine in early is it gained access to SSBM a head of time. I played that to death. (It was modded so it could play Japanese and US games via a switch in the back.)

I don't know if I remember it from back then. I know in the old archives his name was that way. Just as long as you can login with it.. hehe

That's the short form Nintendo themselves use. Just look at any Mario Kart. They refer to tracks like GCN Luigi Circuit for the Double Dash tracks.

Right to left only effects vertical writing. Japanese is Left to right in horizontally. Most often they will bind books right-to-left regardless..

I don't have a way to type kana on this computer.. but the NGC is the same name arrangement in katakana.

Remember it's all relative. Though I am looking forward for that relative hour heh.

While we are discussing any future plans, the current code base has a lot of work it could use to make it better. I'd still like to get it to a state where it more likely to be used by others. Plenty of variables need to be refined so they don't constantly throw errors and warnings. I have an updated todo list and I can give anyone access to if it you are interested.

Working towards any future version will take some time, so while we talk about it, we should focus on what we got too.

Is anyone doing anything for Halloween? I really not doing anything this year.

The issue of SQLAlchemy and ORMs in general is that they apparently tend to make simple queries really simple... and more complex stuff a nightmare.

IMO sending raw SQL would work best. Maybe with something like ABXD's querybuilder, so we're sure there is no SQL injection anywhere.

We don't have to use SQLAlchemy. In fact I belive Ninji found it very restrictive. It does have some very powerful features we could incorporate on our own. Mostly DB agnostic functionality, and the ability to self generate schema. We don't have to support every db variant either, I would say MySQL is a must, and an attempt at PostresSQL due to the way self deployed python works.

If we prepare the queries it will go a long way.

First question, why do we have the option to choose the redirect type? Most people are going to either choose instant redirects or not care. While it's nice to give them the choice, I don't believe it's very useful.


Then, I looked into the code, and the way it's done isn't the cleanest. I may give some help in adopting a cleaner code structure when I find some time/will.

How I typically do these things is basically:

1. check if a POST action was requested (if not, jump to 4)
2. if so, run the appropriate checks on the input. Raise some error flag if something is wrong.
3. If no error happened, perform the action, send Location header and die()

4. start HTML output (pageheader() for Acmlmboard)
5. if an error was raised, display it
6. display the form, with the appropriate data


That's basically how I did it for editprofile. This method also addresses the issue of 'when to send header()s/cookies without getting "headers already sent"'.

It also makes error reporting more user-friendly. Right now, if your submission has an error, it sends you to a separate error page that invites you to just come back to the forum/thread instead of going back to correct your input.


Relatedly: newthread/newreply/editpost/sendprivate have their form code duplicated between normal and preview modes. That has no reason to be.


This isn't to complain about the code, but to give pointers for the code cleanup/refactor that we're planning.

I could run a query and see how many people on Kafuka used the feature. I don't think getting rid of it in 2.5/6 without serious discussion first due to it's legacy nature.

You tend think of things more on the code end, and I tend to think of it more on the end user side. While to everyone else in the world would never use the redirects, there are a few (and shrinking) people who may or will use it for the Acmlmboard nature. So it may not hurt to still include a check and to always show it. That little bit of extra run time/sql is likely worth it. If we rework it, and we find no one does use it can pull it out if we deem in completely bloaty. We'll need some more input but we can talk more about it.

Otherwise I agree. I like approach for an unified notfication/editing system. We also need to reduce or eliminate all duplicate code as you just said.

No complaints.. they are just observations

I am sure you can tweak css to enlarge the minpics in proportion to the rest of the text. (or edit the HTML) heh

We don't want this to go to Win-boo-moo? That's no fun. We even have shiny badges, and those coins that make you wonder why they don't do anything. That's special stuff my friends! Come on. I'll give you suggestions:

1. Find a/your character in a Halloween costume and just swap it out.
2. Change your theme's colors to some kinda of Halloween scheme.
3. Avatar. The easiest thing to swap out like toast in a toaster!
4. Phanto will get you in your dreams. Use that as motivation
5. There could be candy! (Warning: Don't take candy or balloons from random people.)

Even if those suggestions don't help to stir an idea.. you can always get a can of photoshop and just draw a black hat and call it a day! (DO IT.. seriously that would be awesome!)
