Yup. The skinny semi-inaccurate summery is the way is how some variables ABII are coded. It was valid method back in 2005, but is now deprecated in PHP, and this last version made it 'unsupported'. It's going to take a while to get the code fully updated. In fact we need everyone to post about any and all issues. This effects the foundation of the code.

I could understand slapping barely-valid PHP together to get a quick functionality test, but with the time frame given to developing this incarnation of the board software, I think that a better job could have been done.

See my reply from earlier in this message. Shit gets deprecated. Bouche also needed the newer functionality and security so he updated everything. He wasn't aware of the end of life of register_globals, and other components not supported. He's not going to undo it however.

Frankly we need to update the code to work without it anyway. Now we have to. (and it was on the list anyway)

Relax. Tell us what's broke and what's not, and we'll fix it. That's the only way we know quickly.

Wasn't the entire point of taking the nearly six months we were planning/implementing the upgrade to this new software so that we would have up-to-date code, and not stuff that was nearing depreciation into obsolescence?

There is a lot to the code. We did change a lot of 'big things', and that was the goal. Anything we did work on was updated for future-compliance as we went along. We didn't look at anything that was working and didn't have any changes applied due to time constraints. This problem is 'needle in a haystack' type of a problem. Mostly it's stuff like variables (and the board has shittons of those) have to be defined, globally referenced, or managed differently than the old 2005 way. Each non-compliant variable or code needs to be found, and updated. I had planned to start doing this after version 2.5.1 (I don't think you where on IRC when we talked about that one) to clean it up for public release. So no this wasn't part of the 2.1->2.5 phase as it was assumed we would have the time to do the 'search and destroy' style updates after the board was running, and we could set down with a test server and fix it. At least since we did do some of this during that six months so it's better than it would have been.

Oh well. I will be honest, I got upset when it broke too. I am sorry about this annoyance.

This is mostly a service update.

Changes made in this update:

• Added Luna's 'Simply Luna' theme
• Fixed some issues with the shop
• @Mega-Mario applied a few security fixes.
• Many issues related to register_globals.

(well I'm referring to admin-mode editprofile as edituser)

Edituser has $blockroot, which basically checks if an user is root or not, and if they're not, prevents them from promoting someone to root.

One issue with this method is that it only works well with an Acmlmboard-powerlevel based groups scheme. Let's say you have groups organized differently. You have two groups, and both are able to use edituser. One is able to do certain things, and the other one is able to do other things, perhaps more powerful. A member of the first group could use edituser to move themselves to the other group.

This is code from when Kawa introduced the first version of the 'Root Admin' powerlevel. It was built on the legacy power system. (IE: id 4 is root etc). You'll find a lot of code similar to this one that directly tests using the old system. If you see anything that refers to or uses the AB legacy (fixed power level) by number) please mark it for replacement.

Hmm.. Well the goal should keep in mind that our perm set may be nothing like the next guy's. I guess this is uncharted territory as we've not really explored the system in a non-hierarchical form.

#1 * - We can block it per user and group with revoke perms. This is currently limited to 'all or nothing' which could be changed.

#2 * - Possibly. it was just a root user situation we could build a super user mark (like default group, and etc) and build a perm for edit-superuser. However I don't see that being the best solution. (too inflexable)

#3 * - Correct. I agree. Some other board may have someone who they would like to only edit from "Normeys, Mods, but not "Happy Eilte" etc.

#4 * - You mean "default is if you can 'edituser' you will be able to set it to any group that doesn't explicitly have a define?" Well that would work if I read you correctly, but it wouldn't open up the ability to have more fine controls.

I would like to break down the admin functions to much finer perms if we can get the time to do so. I was thinking today where someone having a 'full mod with ban ability' would be useful in some context. They would only be able to set the person's group to 'ban' or 'normal'. (Well and other thing as you wish.. but it's immaterial.) I think that kinda is in line with this as well.

As long as the front end can easily handle it, we could control this in the admin/group editor. We can build it so it makes a perm for each one if so choose.

Thoughts? (sorry I was doing this at lunch so I may not be completely clear due to the rushing to finish it. Let me know if you need clarification)

Indeed. That would provide a very flexible interface, and it would be no more confusing db side than the rest of the perms. Hopefully no one will need to use direct sql to work with them when we are though, (save developers/coders of course)

Also if you haven't looked at it yet (I forgot to mention it) Bouche started to build some functions for permissions. it's in the file testbed.php public_html/

¹Basically I don't mean code tags, but the stylized tags displayed after the name of the threads on forums. (NSFW, 56K, etc). If you compare the ROM hacking sections on both Kafuka and Board2 you'll be able to compare the two styles. Sukasa made them images, and the idea was to replace the font and image with something a bit more refined later. It's been a while and since I don't know when we'll get back to actually improving the graphic version at this point.

I set a global config variable that allows a toggle between the systems. This was mostly meant for anyone else using the software to have a choice. I have on my shortlist to enable it on a user by user basis for max choice. (I was/am waiting for bouche's new extended profile system to be implemented) Currently it's not working and frankly it could just be something small or stupid, but until someone can look I'm going to assume it's broke due to the r_g issue. It doesn't display the color background it should. (I was pondering switching it over since again, until the graphic version is fixed it looks much cleaner.)

Short answer is yes. Forget what everyone else is doing and only worry about yours. The style is different enough to give you two unique gaming experiences, as well as there is no guarantee theirs will get released. It is a "tech demo" after all..

We'll see. Good (?) thing about this place, people are not shy to let you know something doesn't work. @GreyMaria still uses FF 3, so he may be one to say something (I doubt he makes polls often though)

It's an Acmlmboard Tradition for one. All 3 of the currently running ABs have this. Jul and Kafuka end up more so than board2. The original actually have full female alts many of the main members/staff.

Other forums have gender role reversals all the time. The only difference about this is they don't hide it here.

Why does it matter anyway? This isn't real life.

One of my development VMs would show that for about a week you did exactly that. lol Actually it looked rather nice with your layout.

Since we haven't covered E3 too much on this forums, I was wondering what thoughts of the group are on this year's E3? I'm looking forward to the New mario titles of course, but the "Last of US" demo I found really impressive.

What did you guys/gals think?

PHP is a mess. Perl never caught on with me since the structure of it just seems to be a bit too confusing at the time I tried to work with it (1997). I ended up at that time just trying to work with compiled C in cgi-bin.

The thing about PHP that irritates me the most is the inconstant nature. When I was asked a long time ago to describe PHP's format I said something to the effect off "C, shell script, and small dash of perl."

Getting something to it's completion is always difficult if you keep having many other good ideas. You kinda have to just log those for another day and press on

I voted for LoM, but I kinda like Kawa's idea of working with others on a bigger project. If you can't seem to stick with a single project, possibly working with someone else who can help keep you going might help?

(Side note: My issue in life is I stretch myself too thin and tend to give my 100% to everything at once.)

Pikmin 3 and Luigi's mansion dark moon are the two titles I'm the most excited about.

I was really psyched for paper mario on the 3DS... but with news of them doing away with the EXP points and changed up the battle system quite a bit I'm not sure if I'm interested anymore TBH. I'm going to look into more details, but right now it seems to lack some of the things that made TTYD (and the original) such a good game.

Doesn't really matter to me what the new Mario game is called.. as long as it's fun, it's cool. It's based on Mario 3 (and capitalism due to the coin mechanic) so that already has huge boon in my eyes. (not the capitalism part)

Addm: Wii U Starcraft II?

I have a program that I use that actually I got at work called "WipeDrive". Basically it's a micro OS program that does everything from zeros out the drive, to a DDoD 7-Pass wipe. I've used that on any drive I've given away. I usually used the zeroing one since nothing I had was super sensitive and it would do the job anyway.

Also if I want to recycle or dispose of a drive, I usually knock it down the stairs and give it a magnetic treatment before having it scrapped....

I've used Linux a lot for a long time. I still do in one way or another. I also use the BSD side of Mac OS X constantly.However I've never actually run SunOS or Solaris for any great length of time. I've been pondering running OpenIndiana natively on my desktop for a while as an experiment.

Openindiana is an illumos distro based on the old OpenSolaris project established by Sun. Since the merger with Oracle they've been closing down a lot of their OSS projects.

I know most people have heavy in the GNU/Linux camp these days, but I've always enjoyed trying out all the other variants of Unix, (as well as any other OS really) and I haven't really messed around with anything like that in the UNIX family in a while. I deleted my Linux install (I was randomly trying distros so it never had any important data in it) to make room for Windows 8, and playing with it reminded me of what fun it was to try things out natively.

So I guess when I get some time (I miss free time) I am thinking of actually installing OI. I'll of course give it a good test in a VM before I proceed to native. If I do it I will try to document the process here as well.

So has anyone really messed with this particular fork before?

I'll push the changes over first chance I get tonight.

Also a lot of those themes it would be the first update to them since 2007..

B) Broken

I've removed @Rydia's duplicate. I've asked everyone on the coding team to look at register so we can see why it happened. Until we've fixed it I've shut off registration for a little bit while we look at the problem. If anyone needs to register just have them speak to me on IRC in the mean time.

Looks like we got duplicate users:
Gohan - Finops

Apparently the two requests have been processed at the same time, and the 'username already taken' check missed it.

Adding a UNIQUE index to users.name would prevent that (and potentially speed up certain parts of the board).

Similarly, the register process could be optimized a little bit:
* I'm for removing chkproxy(). Does it provide any benefit that outbalances the time it takes to complete? (not to mention that it could be a vector for DoS attacks)
* the 'username already taken' check could be optimized too. The str_replace() part can be ported to SQL. Also is there a reason that all str_replace()s there are done twice?

Please remove the chkproxy() POS, and go ahead with the optimization to the sql/improvement of the username duplicate check.

Please provide me a sql query in the sql thread so I may apply it quickly to the live board.

As for the double str_replace() may be the display name system. It needs the same checks. Frankly if we function the filter out we could make it easier to alter or add to later.
