Greetings from my Wii U. I'm waiting for Wind Waker to download and have nothing better to do.

I started playing Wind Waker HD and got up to Dragon Roost Cave. I'm kicking pretty hard in the ass because I missed the heart piece in Forsaken Fortress that I knew was there! I hope I can go back before the story forces me to in the second half of the game, because I want that heart piece, damn it!

I was going through the eShop and couldn't help but notice a few things... For starters, I noticed that the games I own for the Wii Virtual Console are available for 80% off for Wii U Virtual Console. I'm not sure if it's because I own the Wii version and it's allowing me to buy it again with Gamepad support or if it's just a dumb little quirk. I can't tell because nothing conclusive pops up when I Google it.

Another thing I saw was that Tank! Tank! Tank! is free on the eShop... I just spent $20 on a retail copy of it. What the fuck?

Greetings from my Wii U. I'm waiting for Wind Waker to download and have nothing better to do.

Is the browser any sort of improvement over past Nintendo browsers?

Actually, yeah.

It seems to be running on an improved, yet still slightly-gimped, Opera that they used in the DSi and 3DS. The keyboard is nice on it since it uses the Wuupad touchscreen, which in my book, is a hell of a lot easier to type on than the PS3's onscreen keyboard. Too bad I can't sync my Wuupad to the PS3.

Note about this mood avatar: It's from a Wind Waker parody video that uses Link's grunts of protest when Tetra's pirates load him into the catapult to make a song.

I'm not even trying, either, yet somehow I'm in third place.

I've been focused on getting the Xillia platinum and itching to focus on playing my new Wii U.

How is the Will U so far Trel?

I really like it. It's a really solid console. My only hardware gripe is how shitty the Wuupad's battery is. I've had to charge it twice in the eight hours I've used it so far, granted one of those charges was the initial out-of-the-box-charge-it-because-it-comes-dead.

They did a really good job on updating Wind Waker to modern gameplay. It looks really sharp and plays better than the Cube version ever did. NSMBU is pretty fun, too, I'm happy.

Since I swapped the retail Tank! Tank! Tank! for the digital one, I'm a bit pissed that the digital "free" version is a online multiplayer only, with a limit of three matches a day. Story mode cost ten dollars, which I bought because I'm probably only ever gonna play it solo.

The only good part about giving up my TTT disc was that I swapped it for a $20 eShop card. After the TTT Story Mode purchase, I had ten dollars left, so I bought Earthbound. That brings me to my software gripe...

Virtual console/Wii mode is upscaled to 720/1080p, but left in 4:3 aspect ratio. This means that you have big ass black bars on either side of the screen with nothing going on in them. I can understand Wii mode having this because it was limited to 480 resolution, most commonly 4:3 because the system came out before the major advent of 16:9 HDTVs. WuuVC, on the other hand, could have done to the 4:3 games what Capcom did with the PS3/360 versions of Mega Man 10 and put a frame in the sidebars.

Screenshots of what I'm talking about
PS3 MM10
Wuu Earthbound

Something to keep in mind for these screenshots. They're in 720p, but snapped in my laptop's native resolution (1366x768), there's extra headroom because of this.

Also note on the MM10 screen: The PS3 shrinks the image somewhat. It fits my TV just fine, but the overall image overscans somewhat. I don't understand why, especially since I can set the Wuu to 1080p (a resolution my TV "doesn't" support) and the screen adjustment arrows fit perfectly in my screen with no overscan cut off at the largest setting. I'm not sure if it's a component VS HDMI thing or what it is. I'm kinda confused.

/long winded first impression review

I decided to feed my curiosity in this quote:

I got to thinking about it because I was looking at the mini map in Xillia and noticed I could see about 100 pixels more on the left side using HDMI. I saved and quit to the XMB, switched over to component, loaded back into the game, took a picture on my phone, then went back to HDMI and compared the photo I took to what I was seeing on screen. Lo and behold, I was seeing more in the edges as well as sharper picture.

Of course, I wasn't satisfied, so I decided to do the test with the Wuu. I'm glad that Nintendo included a screen fit option in the settings, because it confirmed my suspicion faster than comparing to game imagery... Especially since I've not dropped nearly 100 hours into a Wuu game with component to know what I'm looking at*. Much to my surprise, 1080p HDMI fit my screen with a slight underscan (nearly negligible) at the "largest" setting; yet even on 720p component, I had to turn the image size down by two notches to get the full picture on screen.

I'm actually kinda surprised by discovery tonight. I didn't realize that I really didn't know what I thought I knew about AV technology. All the better, I suppose, because it'll help with my video production**.

* Yes, as of typing this, my Tales of Xillia timer is sitting at 97 hours, ten minutes. Only about eleven hours of that has been clocked using HDMI.

** If I ever get back into full-on production.

Also on my mind after proofing this: I can't help but notice that I'm the longest-winded user of this entire board. Not sure if I should be proud of that because peeps might just be looking at my posts and say, "Pfft, whatever. tl;dr."

:/

I just dropped another eight hour sitting into powering through the platinum for Tales of Xillia. Story-wise, I played through the tail end of chapter three and the entirety of chapter 4. Once I returned to Rieze Maxia, I powered through the last twenty or so sub-events I needed to pop the Sub-Event Superhero trophy. Most of them were odd jobs or cutscenes, but a fair amount of them were "Go find this boss and force feed it some dirt."

I thought it was pretty funny how the trophy popped during the optional boss fight against The Lord of the Underworld's servants. Not that it matters from a gameplay standpoint, but it showed me that you get credit flags for doing sub-events and the grade points from whatever tier of the title you pop for doing so BEFORE any battles happen, if applicable. Though, aside from the trophy popping, you can't see the benefit from completing your titles until after the events tied to them are finished. Case in point: the link (Breaker, Bind, etc)/signature (Snap Pivot, Spirit Shift, etc) skill trophies don't pop until the victory scene plays, so you have to play those ones by ear.

All in all, the trophy flags seem to be all over the place.

Now to get some sleep since I work this afternoon (it's ten after six in the morning as I type this). Tonight, I get to see what Unknown* throws at me for the final showdown against Muzet and Gaius.

I've only wiped against the two of the Devil's Beasts and the Servants that I can recall. Hell, I even shit stomped the bosses that gave me hell on Milla's side in under a minute each**.

* My difficulty setting.

** I completely owe those victories to inheriting levels and Devil's Arms progress.

My excuse is still RO2.

I would blame Tales of Xillia, but I finished that game out on Monday night. I can't blame the Wuu because I haven't had the time to play. Let's blame work, then. Sleep, too.

By the way, @Gywall, I sent you a Miiverse friend request.

I'm pretty short on power sockets in this room. So the charger and Wii U are plugged opposite ends of the room.

Are you able to use a surge protector strip, or is your wiring older and can't take the additional draw (Older houses can have that issue.)
It's more of locations being awkward to reach.
My surge protector sits in the middle of the floor but normally doesn't have a spare outlet. Since I'm using HDMI now, my component switch doesn't need plugged in unless I want to play the Wii, so I leave my Wuupad plugged in all the time.

It's gonna suck when I want to record Wuu footage, because I'll have to unplug the Wuupad charger and plug in the Hauppauge in its place.

my 3DS has been quite lonely lately.

As is mine... I bought Luigi's Mansion and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon a few months ago as well as Etrian Odyssey IV long before that, and haven't really played any of them.

Been playing my Wii U in my spare of time when I'm not exhausted from work.

In NSMBU, I've made it to 2-fort, and haven't played it much since the first couple days of owning the system. I'll get to it eventually.

Wind Waker HD has most of my attention, I just did the Earth Temple in my last sitting. I have all but eleven heart pieces, all four bottles, the magic armor, both bomb and arrow upgrades, the extended mana meter and the Swift Sail. I'm enjoying this version of the game so much more than the original.

Tank! Tank! Tank! has gotten very little attention from me, probably due to the fact that switching to the "free" version from the retail copy still has me a bit pissed off.

I also picked up Nintendo Land, which is fun for what it's worth. Some of the minigames are annoying, but I haven't played them all yet. Some I doubt I'll be able to play anytime soon due to being a loner.

In unrelated Nintendo news for me: I bought Shantae on 3DS Virtual Console.

I suspect that the XB1 will have the same effect on me... Luckily it gets released on a Friday night so at least I don't have to take a day off work.
I don't think I'll be even looking at the Xbone. Microsoft's whole attitude with the reveal is still leaving a nasty taste in my mouth.

They've soured my opinion so much that I don't even want a 360 for games like Saints Row 1 any more.

More power to you on getting one, but I'm sticking with Sony and Nintendo for consoles again this gen.

I find it hard to believe I'm on the top, even if it IS this early in the month.
That's what happens when you become the board's poster boy of activity.

I finally sat and finished the main story of Pokemon White 2. Really, I just went as fast as I could, cutting whatever corners I could to get to the Pokemon League at level 65.

I was able to romp the whole league with very few hang ups, despite not having as many type advantages as I would have preferred, seriously, a Fighting-type move would've been GREAT against Grimsley and a Psychic-type move would've been great against Marshal.

My team finished as follows:
Echo level 69 - Arcanine
Smugleaf level 67 - Serperior
Drake level 66 - Dragonite
Sodomizer level 65 - Magnezone

Echo was my champion because of his type coverage. Smugleaf surprised me against Marshal because I only had to HP heal him due to three Coils turning him into an unstoppable beast. Drake took out Iris' Hydreigon and Shauntal's Chandellure right out of the gate, but he saw very little beyond that. I think I only used Sodomizer against Iris' Archeops because I knew Discharge would absolutely destroy it.

Now I can move onto X and Y without feeling like I left ends untied.
