I finally dreamt something after a long drought.

It was about swimming under the sea near a beach, only to see miniature sharks. For what I remember, pretty much everybody but me was scared, even though at the end none of the mini sharks did anything. :P

strange stuff, there was more before but it went forgotten

Seems like you can change the individual instruments in that one too. Does it also have the ability to load several soundfonts and use the best (what you prefer) instruments?

A great thing would be if it can also modify the volume of each instrument.
Changing the soundfont is basically required for these MIDIs.

You should be able to load whatever .SF2 (and other) soundfonts you want. The MIDIs from that Sonic Retro page come with their own soundfonts. Each game has its own (but in practice, it seemed like the every soundfont in that archive is the same).

The one I use for foobar2k (DUMB module decoder) has a page for changing the volume of the instruments, but for these MIDIs it doesn't work. I suppose the WinAmp plugin has a similar page, and maybe it will work there.

Why do you play inferior versions?
I don't even know.

Maybe it was a section about spike non-invincibility being bad in the Wily Fortress, but then I played it and it went without problems. >_>

With MM2 this is a lot more problematic, with bosses having invincibility frames (particularly bad with Flash Man and Metal Man of all things) and not being able to shoot every frame.
I mean, I'm not exactly good at these games, but the Metal Man fight took too many attempts while it didn't go that bad in the NES version.
