Ferdal, I don't know if you read about Bulldozer performance, but from your system you should better go Intel, as you already have about the fastest AMD CPU there is now. Unless you are an AMD fan of course...

Also, since your system is already so fast now, you better wait for Q2 as hard drive prices will drop, and Nvidia will have its new range too, causing all GPU prices to drop. Also, I am not impressed by the only 20 % advantage over the GTX 580 that the Radeon 7xxx series have.

I am not into high-end hardware as I don't have the money, and even if I did I would probably still go for the price-performance ratios.

At the moment I have:

Core i7-870 @ 3,25 GHz
P55 chipset
GeForce GTX 560 Ti
8 GB RAM @ 1480 MHz
60 GB SSD
2 TB HDD

And I intend to keep it for some years (it helps to not be interested in the newest games). The only heavy thing I do is fractal rendering, which is all about CPU speed, cores and efficiency.

I've wanted to get a new computer for years, but I am so inexperienced I don't know what I should get. ._.

This thing I'm running on is from 2004 and more than ready for the computer graveyard.
It really depends on what you want to do with it.
If it's just for Internet and casual gaming, you can get a € 400 12" netbook.
If you want Full HD movies and the latest action games, or you want to do a lot of video-editing, you can basically make it as expensive as you want :P

Here's the Mega-Room. Linked 'cause it's huge.

Nevermind the heaps of weird things here and there.
Nice keyboard.

...yeah I suppose.

I'm not really into the newest games. But I have some older ones, like Simcity 4, that really struggle on the current computer, and those could definitely use an upgrade.
Any computer nowadays can run that one. A netbook does not have an optical (CD/DVD) drive, so you should go for a notebook/desktop PC.
So the questions that remain are, do you want portability, and how large do you want your screen.

also so it was, my html/css is very rusty apparently
Sorry Foom, although the picture certainly has its charm, a layout with so much white hurts my eyes on the dark kind of boards that AcmlmBoards are.

Desktops are still somewhat cheaper than equally-powered laptops, but the difference certainly isn't as big any more as it used to be.
Also, with desktops, you can buy any keyboard and monitor you find comfortable to work with.
The downside is of course the lack of portability.

A bot from the future got stuck.

I suggest to start using ABXD's calendar implementation.

This is a problem nearly every AcmlmBoard has, webspiders get stuck in the calendar for ages, because there are no clear limits to it.

In ABXD, we just scrapped the entire concept of multiple years. The calendar's only real use is for looking up birthdays anyway, as all popular operating systems have great calendars built-in.

I still think it's a lot of conspiracy bullshit, just like the 2012 apocalypse, Nibiru, the New World Order, Americans blew up the WTC themselves, Aspartame causes all kinds of diseases etc.

Nevertheless I like this protest video:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1w6GtwOvnWM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

If not, I am ready for the US/rest of the world netsplit, I already have the right browser :P

How do you people browse with small resolutions? ;_;

Get a netbook, then come back. Compared to that, this resolution is huge.

It's a real pain in modern times :P
From the experiences on my 1024x600 netbook, I can say that resolution is just enough for decent browsing. For some windows apps you do need more vertical pixels, but with the web you are fine. Don't even think on keeping your bookmarks or history panel open though :P

BTW posting this from my desktop, which has a 1920x1080 monitor.

I've read reviews on the 7xxx series outperforming the best GTX's OCed out there for about what 100 bucks cheaper.
True, but AMD can still overprice this card (the production is much cheaper) until there are competing models. And I believe there is a lot more to gain than 20 % from a die shrink.

And since you have an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz, which is still the fastest AMD desktop processor around (!), you should not change that until Piledriver is there. Intel Sandy Bridge-E is too expensive indeed, but the regular Sandy Bridge Core i7-2600 is still a very good deal, albeit still not worth the upgrade from what you now have.

Edit: main reason I have Intel myself is the thermal envelope, as I like to build my systems to be as quiet as possible (I once had water cooling but it is a lot of maintenance and it started to leak after a few years, killing my Radeon 9800 Pro).

Thanks :) I got that keyboard for Christmas, and I must say it's nice when posting in a dark room. I always thought I should get me a backlit keyboard before but never got around searching for one because lazy...
I once had an illuminated keyboard as well, but I prefer the flatness of the one I have now.

I've been one of the people sending in letters to my politicians asking them to vote against it.
I guess that's a good thing :)

SOPA will take away the creativity on the web, but I highly doubt it will take away the piracy.
Remember how the DMCA would do that? How we would never be able to copy CD's and DVD's any more because of the protection and encryption?

I dunno if I can get into the whole tablet business just yet. My phone's enough of all that noise.
Really, tablets are fun, and that's it.
They are much slower and pricier than netbooks, and a real keyboard and trackpad costs extra.
But yeah, you do get to touch your angry birds...

Wikipedia has been very valuable to me a lot of times. If you say "Anyone can just put everything there" you are not understanding the very concept.

As soon as we accept this clear fact, we can all post in friendship and harmony :)

You don't hear me complaining about your circlejerking with Nick and mr_j either.
