worst game breaking bug you've encountered?

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening; I had the non-DX version and made heavy use of the SELECT button bug as a kid.

It turns out it's very easy to get stuck in a wall such that you save the game while stuck it can never be restored.

RIP Link.

If given no restrictions on anything (budget, scope, etc.) what sort of game or other form of personal project would you like to see realized?

Actually finish Aspect Star 4

So I'm usually a "make reasonable goals" kind of person. I recently sketched out an idea for a sequel to Space Ava that would be for the TurboGrafx-CD, with some reasonable limits that I think might be acheivable. If I start on it, though, it'll be the third attempt at a Space Ava sequel just to enter development, so no promises.

So since I have that idea on the mind, let's turn it up to 11. The idea was that the game would be a selection of puzzles (some in the style of Space Ava, some in a different style-- oh I guess that variant also entered code, make that fourth attempt to enter development) interconnected by a hub world where you would talk to various characters, since to me it was really the cutscenes that stood out on Space Ava.

But we have infinite scope. So cutscenes should be more animated rather than just a few facial expressions. This is something I've wanted to do, but my meager art skills haven't been up to the task. But now I'll go from "more than just facing the screen" to "full animation". I guess we'll need voice acting too.

Indeed, the combination of animation into gameplay is something that I've thought about but every FMV game has disappointed me in. It's something I'd like to try but I can't make animations! INFINITE SCOPE! This game isn't for the pathetic weak TurboGrafx-CD, it's for the Mega LD now, the ultimate retro FMV console. And we're going to show them!

Yep, the scope has now expanded to "create studio-quality cartoons, and print LaserDiscs". And even more impossibly, "make a good FMV game". Of course, the puzzles of Space Ava will still be present as well. Use the Sega CD ASIC for scaling and rotation! It's the logical successor to Space Ava's Sega Master System-styled isometric 3D. So toss "learn 68k assembly" onto the list, and "wrangle the Mega CD/LD's multiple processors".

The game will do a full release for both LaserActive and PC, boxed, with appropriate art. (Again, an expansion of what I was planning to do, get CDs pressed in nice jewel cases, ramped up to 11)

Having done this, I will have spent lifetimes worth of effort and wasted money on a scale that would make the US government blush, in order to create a super-niche game that no one will play. Which is why no one gives me infinite money, I suppose. (Maybe if I promise to incorporate a blockchain?)

Most depressing of the mainline Final Fantasy games?

I would say Final Fantasy II (proper numbering). However, I've never played any of the post-VI games.

Now, Final Fantasy VI did destroy the world. But I don't know, I think it's the interpersonal stuff that made Final Fantasy II more effective.

also, it's a game that tried a lot of new things and many of them failed completely (the leveling system, the annoying conversation system), which is pretty depressing to see too from an entirely different standpoint.

what war did lt. surge fight in anyway? is the pokemon world an alternate version of earth that split off during the 60s?

I would say they split off in the 80's or 90's because of the space shuttle.... I guess whatever war really screwed up the US, they were forced to sell the shuttle Columbia to the Japanese?

favorite pentium 2/3 era thinkpad (pre refresh)?

I'll go with the Thinkpad 600 for that 12" screen. (Did they make the ThinkPad 600 12" model with the Pentium II? I hope so)
Posted by AtomicAstro
Do you think hentai elements in games that are otherwise fairly innocuous add to or detract from them?

If by "hentai elements" you mean "explicit sex", I would say they detract. If you mean "casual nudity, or particularly sexy anime women", I personally think it can add to my enjoyment (as long as the game isn't trying to take itself super-seriously while gag boobs bounce around). I can see why some people disagree though.

They did make the 12" ThinkPad 600 in both Pentium MMX and Pentium II, didn't they?

Thanks for confirming for me :) I'm not actually super familiar with that period of ThinkPad history

what mechanic or practice that was prevalent in old games are you glad to see gone now?

Controller-controlled crosshair shooters are an abomination.

Did you ever believe any dumb rumors or anything about games when you were younger? (For reference, I knew of a guy who was genuinely convinced by some kid that platformers go from right to left in Japan)

Oh man I believed everything in Pokémon Red Version, one time I even talked to the guy who gives you the OLD ROD 1000 times because I had heard it would get you an even stronger secret fishing rod. I didn't even fish that much in the game!

I feel like the 8-bit Pokémon games were just glitchy enough that anything was believable when you were a kid. I'm really glad the Mew glitch ended up sounding exactly like a playground rumor

favorite rumor/urban legend related to video games?

The whole Polybius thing; a CIA plot to rewrite kids' brains, very cool stuff.

They say Acmlm used Polybius code to create Acmlmboard DUN DUN DUN

Came close when trying to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Y, but nope...

Anyway just go down to

Gonna take that ban as a one-week ban so I should be fine now.

Didn't FFVI just rearrange it, though?

Oh fuck I forgot I seriously banned people from this thread in the past didn't mean for you to take that seriously, sorry

Also hm, are you saying it's possible Kefka did less damage in destroying the world than Final Fantasy II did with the tornado thing? Welp... Kefka's almost as bad at destroying the world as I am I guess

I haven't played FFII so I wouldn't know.

Should I? I'd play the original NES version in that case. And yes, I'd use the broken Dark Sword or whatever it was.

Do you like RPGs with weird progression systems? Then I'd say give it a try, but personally I found the replacement for leveling up way too confusing.

Umm...define "weird"?

Romancing Saga doesn't have traditional levels either.

The FF2 system is one of the "you grow in skills that you use" systems; attack and your attack goes up; the more you get hurt, the more HP you gain... attacking your party members, therefore, can be a viable grinding strategy, which is a bit odd.

I'm not super familiar with the SaGa system, but I think I've heard it's a similar "you gain in what you use" system? But a bit more polished. So it might not be that weird to you.

what handheld do you with got more recognition?

The Neo Geo Pocket Color. The last gasp of classic SNK, and it's clicky

Ever played Sonic Pocket Adventure? :D

It's such a weird game! The combination of random music from the Genesis Sonics makes it feel like a fangame to me

Of course, today the best Sonic games are fangames (Sonic Mania), so maybe that's a good thing

ever play any koei strategy games?

I've tried some of the NES ones but couldn't get into them... I think I'm just too lazy for strategy

Isn't squishing a cat a bad idea anyway?

Sometimes cats like aggressive pets, but that might be a bit much :P

Attacking party members to level up sounds more like an exploit, right?

Nah, the exploit is that you can still get credit for actions that you take, but then cancel them >_>

What about the Valis games?

I have Valis and Valis II on MSX and Valis II, Valis III, and Valis IV, along with the remake of Valis I on the PC Engine CD... :) The cartridge art for Aspect Star "N" was inspired heavily by Valis II.

Never played Valis X though

favorite wolfteam game?

I'll go with the Sega CD port of Time Gal maybe? It's a really good port, very impressive that they actually redrew most of the video graphics rather than just use awful dithering like most Sega CD FMVs.

Favorite fighting game song?

Definitely going to go with something from the Sonic the Fighters soundtrack because it is amazing, but which track...

I guess I'll go with Death Egg's Eye, but Advertise KIYO, South Island, even the Character Select... it's such a good soundtrack overall!

What Sega CD games do you wish you owned but probably never will?

Does Time Gal for the Mega LD count? It's kind of like a Sega CD game...

If not, then Popful Mail. The Sega CD version is better than the PC Engine CD version (which I do have) in my book, but it's so expensive...

favorite neo geo song?

The opening tune. It's beautiful. I also like how it's stored on the games, not the console, so the instruments differ in some games.

Or maybe for an actual song, the first level from Magician Lord. Going early in the Neo Geo's lifecycle because, well, I'm a sucker for FM synthesis... and on the Neo Geo that means early games.

is there such thing as a question that isn't silly?

If I'm about to overload the nuclear reactor and drain the coolant, and you come running in screaming "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!", I think that might not be... no, I guess it's still a silly question.

Huh... news to me :P What's your laserdisc collection like?

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek Generations. Oh, and a boxed set of Disney's Fantasia. And Dances with Wolves, for some reason.

So, er, not great? But not terrible... for someone who watches as few movies as me there are at least movies there that I like to rewatch?

is it one of the good players, that has automatic side flipping and can also play cds?

It's the Pioneer CLD-A100 from 1993; it can play CDs, but no automatic side flipping or surround sound.

It can play some other things too, so that's nice... automatic side-flipping would probably be nicer though
