I have no idea how best to backup my system partition. (Yeah I don't backup my data, that's because I don't really have a large enough storage to store it on).
Since XP System Restore is an obvious failure, I got myself True Image a while ago. But I just heard some bad experiences about the restore process failing, and that set off my alarm bells. Am I doing it right or is there a better backup software? Do you backup your stuff, and if so how? |

One method is to copy-paste data files.. but that's only good if you don't mind the tedious time restoring everything upon a failure. 
Oddly enough, that's my preferred method. Alternatively, I'd go with cloning the partition to a mirror drive.. If I had a drive to copy the mirror to.. 
Last time I cloned a partition was when moving my data to a new drive as my old one would be incompatible with my newer system. Used Norton Ghost for that one. The world could always use more heroes! |

I like Norton Ghost, as it still works on MS-DOS 7.1 on a USB-stick (it's too big for a diskette nowadays), it's fast and reliable, there are drivers for modern network cards, and it can do anything you never expected was possible on DOS.
But I don't backup entire partitions, just my personal folder which is about 350 GB at this time, and I pump it to my USB 3.0 external hard drive in a non-compressed WinRAR archive. 
Wow, it's high time to do a new backup it seems... ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

My good sense tells me I should backup my system sometimes.
For a while, I had Windows 7's autobackup set to start every Sunday at 7PM. But every goddamn time, it went the same. The thing lagged my computer for about one or two hours, and then at like 99%, went "Backup failed. The device was not ready.". Two hours of lag wasted just because Microsoft's impatient program couldn't wait for the external HDD to wake up before trying to write on it. In the end I was sick of that and just disabled the autobackup thing. ____________________ Kuribo64 - melonDS want some revolution in your coffee? |

I never liked NTBACKUP or even MSBACKUP back in the days.
I love WinRAR and I used to love ARJ. Copying a 15-diskette spanned archive from a friend, extracting it just to find a read error on disk #13, requiring the entire archive to be recreated, fun times... The backup I did yesterday was 60 GB larger than the previous one, I really have to clean up all that pony stuff... I once found a very old paper backup journal at a school I worked for, one line went like:
