On April 21, 1989, the Game Boy saw the light of the day in Japan.

I think all of us can agree that the Game Boy was one of the most influential consoles of all time, and it's what really brought handhelds to the popularity they have today. Ahh, the memories of playing some Super Mario Land on the backseat of the car while the family is driving to vacation.

I still have an old b&w Game Boy at home. I bet it would still work if I gave it some batteries. I could fire it up and play some Tetris or even Pokemon...

What are your memories with the Game Boy?

Oh wow. It's that old?

I remember playing an original GB once. I then owned a GBC after.

The Game Boy was light-years ahead of any prior handheld system. Actual pixels, rather than built-in display elements! Changeable games! Actual gameplay!

Sadly, I didn't have one. My parents thought I'd lose the tiny cartridges, so I didn't get a Game Boy system until the Advance in 2001.

I do remember playing SML2 on a very large Game Boy retail test unit at a store.

The cartridges for the GB weren't tiny..

I don't think I'd easily lose one of those. >_>

They were tiny compared to, say, NES cartridges. And my parents were very overprotective. I wasn't allowed to leave the yard or surf the Internet alone until I was 13.

I remember, I got my first Game Boy Color just for the Pokémon games, back in 1998 :) Had it until recently, although the speaker died on it... still own all the classic generation Pokémon games, but not the Game Boy Color anymore (at least the SP can still play GBC games :D)

Ooh, what game was that from?

Some people would bring their Game Boys to school, although technically they weren't allowed. But I'd see them in their desks or whatever.

I never had one myself (or any handheld until the DS Lite), but a friend did and I played Link's Awakening on it for a while (and some Tetris), fun times :) Also played a little bit of Mario Land 1 and 2 in class once ...

My sister should also remember getting a GameBoy Color and Pokemon Yellow, and eventually each of the later handhelds and generations >_>

Also can't forget the burnt GameBoy (from the gulf war) that still works 20 years later, it's really made of nintendium :P

Gameboy had a crazy long lifetime, in those 25 years it was probably relevant for at least 13 years with games still being released (a lot of games that were marked for GBC still worked with the orginal GB). I actually went straight from a fat brick GB to a GBA SP as I never saw a reason to get a GBC. :P
