Another issue with the AB1 style layout storage is that old layouts aren't always eternal. Files being reused for newer layouts, or just completely disappearing... try looking at the AB archives or even old threads at Jul, for example.

And there's stuff like customizable post sidebars, where that would just not work.

The one layout I was unable to resurrect was quite busy and horrible. I had fire bros and a king yoshi.(on top of the one in the ranks.. The Fire Bros. was a large scan of the one in the SMB3 manual.)

Indeed. Unless the server stores everything, it's going to corrupt over time.

Actually, you could do it with some css hackery. But that's a dirty way of doing it.

I used a dirty bit of css in my post layout for a while. But eh.. I no longer need that now a proper solution is in place. In fact, that change is on show here. ;)
