The problem is (and has always been) with terrorists is that they're spread out in such a way that you're going to bomb what you're trying to protect, therefore making the whole exercise a moot point, and the bombers terrorists themselves. The problem we're in right now is when we (the US) pulled out of Iraq, we lost pertinent intel required in order to reduce civilian casualties and collateral damage to make said exercise able to be executed in any meaningful form.

Someone's got to do something, and the terrorists have pretty much everyone on the sidelines twiddling their thumbs. I see the US siding with Great Britain, avoiding allying with Iran. Iran doesn't have western interests at heart and are aligned to their own arguably nefarious motives.
