Plays both carts and CD-ROMs? Odd. I wonder how it chooses which medium to boot from, if both are inserted.

I also wonder what the hardware inside it is like. Could it play retail SNES games or retail PlayStation games?

It's too bad Nintendo missed out on making a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES and later the N64 ;) (unfortunately, companies like Panasonic and NEC had CD consoles of their own in the 1990s, so they weren't an option :P)

Well, the DS also had 2 Slots (GBA and DS), but unlike in the 90s, you can now choose what to use, Software-wise.
Since it's likely a Developer Unit, I assume the answer to the second Question would be, none.

Nintendo has never Released a CD Console.
GameCube uses Mini-Discs, Wii uses DVD-ROMs, and Wii U uses either Proprietary Discs, or Blu-Ray.

I'm pretty sure this bogus. Probably composed of parts purchased at a computer store. What's next? Nintendo Illuminati?

It might be bogus, but it is true that the two companies were in the works to develop an system set-up like this. Though the fact that it has no Nintendo logo is very suspicious.

My first thought when I read about it.

Kinda interesting, though.

As I recall the contemporaneous Sega CDX will only play a CD game if there's no cartridge in the slot.

I wouldn't be too quick to make that judgement call yet.
The only way to find out for sure is for this guy to take it to a official nintendo/sony repair shop or sony technical support and ask them.
Have them open up the case, look at the serial numbers if any and look the stuff up online.
Just by looking at the image and seing how old it is and sness do age badly.

I think he may have a real prototype if it is legit he should be able to get it power on.
Testing Hook the game from sony and maybe one of these may prove it can load it up properly and boot the game.

Nintendo has never Released a CD Console.
GameCube uses Mini-Discs, Wii uses DVD-ROMs, and Wii U uses either Proprietary Discs, or Blu-Ray.

DS has two slots indeed, but the GBA slot is for backwards compatibility. The SNES/PS hybrid isn't trying to be backwards compatible with anything.

Depending on what the hardware inside it is, maybe it might be able to play some retail games. If it's close enough to a SNES or to a Playstation. But it's probably some weird mix that is incompatible with both.

Nintendo's GC/Wii discs aren't standard minidisc/DVD, either. Well, dunno about the Gamecube, but Wii discs have a different sector layout that makes them unreadable by standard DVD drives.

Because lots of computer stores have SNES joypads made by Sony, yeah >_>

Nintendo's name appears on the back of the joypad.

But yeah, they got ripped there. Few people would ever look behind the joypad. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Sony and Nintendo 'split apart' before finishing the project.

Remember how I used to be a 3rd Party Nintendo Developer?
All Nintendo Test Hardware use the exact same Hardware as their Retail Counterparts (Dev Hardware typically have more RAM inside, but nothing else is different), but they're still not able to Run Retail Games, unless you Convert them to a 'Dev-friendly Format'.

It looks like there are two power buttons on the system, one on the front and one on the top. Also, why would you put a cartridge in backwards?
