Yeah XP has its place, namely 2000s PC gaming setups Although I tend to prefer Windows 2000 myself, I could live with using Win2K only myself "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

If Windows 7 wasn't sabotaged to try and force people to 10, I'd probably still continue using it.
It's just that Microsoft decided to ensure it could not receive features, and cut a lot out. Not even third parties are able to provide new features thanks to the core being blocked from it. I upgraded to 10 reluctantly, but I can't say that I'm entirely happy about it. (Gimme proper Aero Glass back) The world could always use more heroes! |

I don't mind Windows 10 myself, haven't had any issues on any of my machines at least... I still miss Windows 2000 and 98 though "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

I'd rather have Classic back solely for nostalgic reasons more than Aero 😘 As for XP I usually prefer the Royale/Media Center theme or the Embedded theme "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

♥12236 ✿4705 ★50 I don't think any of the XP themes other than Classic were any good... all way too chunky and plastic-y, if that makes any sense for things that aren't physical objects |

I think XP's themes had their "wow" for the time. Silver.. though the Zune theme in black was pretty tidy. The world could always use more heroes! |

Any way to get the Classic theme under Windows 10? Would at least like to have it as an option 😉 "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

I dislike Windows 10 because the new features are absolutely useless, it is ugly as all fuck, and that stupid Photos app shit only exists to suck your RAM. It's not even a good app, anyway. |

Posted by fiver Ugly, yes. Moreso inconsistent though. About 30% of the base OS is still using non-UWP applications. The new features were in much older Windows versions and much better too. Vista is probably the pinnacle of these, WMM 6.0, Windows Mail, Photo Gallery, WMP11 etc. were so much better than the W10 equivalents (like you say, Photos eats your RAM). Oh, and Vista was at least optimised by SP2. Windows 10 won't even run on a processor lower than an i3. People call it "moving with the times" but some people cannot or do not need to afford a high spec PC for basic tasks! Oh, and you can't rip CDs or watch DVDs on W10 without the ugly WMP12 (which while first being introduced in 7, most people hated its poor UI so why keep it around?) - and for the latter you need to PAY for the fucking DVD player playback in the Windows Store. Speaking of the Windows Store. The only apps published in it are by Indian scammers, everyone else insane enough to make UWP apps use GitHub or something to publish them rather than that overly restrictive, scam-central "Store". Did they ever learn from Windows 8? No. They took Windows 8.1, made it heavy as hell (8.1 doesn't have so many issues on low end hardware compared to 10) and forced it down our throats. |

On the flip side, Windows 10 is slowly taking steps backwards. I just crave the day they bring back full Aero Glass, the third party solution kept screwing up my colour settings.. so I dropped it.
The core of Windows 10 runs better than Windows 7's core, but the new "apps" let it down. I stick to my own toolkit, including programs brought forwards from 7. I'm just happy Paint Shop Pro 5 still runs. Also, the power-user in me went to remove as much of the bloat and crap. 512MB RAM on Windows XP days taught me a lot about optimisation of the workspace, so anything that can be disabled.. is disabled. Anything that can be removed, is removed - I don't even have the Windows Store app. The world could always use more heroes! |

That explains it then. Windows 8 for example, is probably the best at RAM management (even better than Vista I'd say), because it was designed mainly for low end devices. Windows 10 basically took Windows 8, tried to make it work on the desktop - which was a failed experiment they failed to reverse - and gobbled up 1.5GB of RAM when idle as compared to Vista's something-around-400MB (yet Vista came with more features than any Windows OS did). Sure, Vista was bloated for the time and buggy only because of poor hardware that cut corners when cutting corners, and no one gave it a chance but it ran fine on most PCs that came out in the late 2000s. (Proof, I've run 3 Vista PCs from 2008-2009, and they all ran pretty good.)
I just don't get it. Vista pushed both hardware and software developers to basically 'fix their shitty ancient-standard code/corner-cutting' and then now because of that push for better and faster hardware, software developers have the fucking audacity to make you need 16GB of RAM for a web browser to run smoothly. Ugh... what has the world come to. |

Someone actually said that Moore's law would apply to computers for more years to come if software efficiency was dramatically improved. Yet, there's developers making APIs that must load everything at once even if the program using the API does not use all the features. Now on the web, those APIs are a nightmare as every tab or window must load the API over and over.
Some of this design is down to greed on modern web, by trying to obscure what's content and what's an ad. A simpler design would be to check for an ad's existence five to ten seconds after it should be displayed, and act accordingly - even "hidden" ads generate revenue after all. I miss the days of simple banner ads. It just took a few obnoxious ads to ruin everything - Pop-up advertising, Flashing ads (Epilepsy, anyone?), Window-resizing ads, Location hi-jacking ads, self-resizing ads.. and so on. Banner ads that were static images, or some plain text, or a combination of both.. I still click them if they're interesting, to be honest. They're also the type of ads you expect on Facebook, or sometimes a video post showing off a product - and as much as people will say bad things about Facebook, their advertising policies are spot-on. The world could always use more heroes! |

Yeah. Come to think about it, FB doesn't actually force you to watch the video by shoving it in your face, unlike the majority of those news websites that have Taboola box ads and pop-up resizing videos everywhere.
It's a shame that the web has been so money/profit centric since about late 2012 or so. Basically when Flash started to become phased out, the millennial kids turned around 11-12, so that they could make a quick buck out of teenagers etc. much more easily in today's commercially-obsessed world. |
