I personally enjoy imagining the Super Mario Bros as a dramatic political drama; the Mushroom Kingdom is a declining power; Princess Peach has a tenuous relationship (unable to be crowned properly) with the throne and relies on the manipulations of her Chancellor to retain local control, and a hired mercenary from another world to face King Koopa, who may have a more legitimate claim on the throne.
