What's so good about Sonic 2 Delta?

The latest version has both Sonic 1 and 2 stages in it, and you can even play as Knuckles and Tails :)

Well, it still sounds somewhat interesting. I remember wanting to play Knuckles in Sonic 1 for a while. Sonic and Knuckles was so much fun.

Y'know why slotting Sonic 1 into Sonic & Knuckles gets you blue spheres instead of Knux in Sonic 1?

Primo, palette issues. A lot of badniks and such share a palette with Sonic, so their blue parts would turn red.

Secundo, Marble Garden is fuckin' broken when you can just climb over the whole place.

An old Knux-in-S1 ROM hack went through the effort to fix the first issue, but there's not much you can do about the second.
