< Nicole > at least the young will never figure out the ancient IRC technology
Found this in AtomicAstro's signature. I have quite a bit to say about it Well... there are people that still use IRC and are also quite young... like me, for instance. While I don't really use IRC much as am yet to find a channel that I like (I might check out Kafuka's if NoLimitNET enables NickServ registration again), I've also got enough knowledge to know how to set up InspIRCd and Anope services on an Ubuntu 14.04 server; that said I'm odd for my age. I prefer IRC over Discord although my community all prefer Discord because it's $trendychatserviceoftheday, while IRC is actually showing a slower decline than $trendychatserviceoftheday will in a few years' time or so... IRC has been active since 1989 and will continue to be active as long as people still use it especially in traditional communities or technical fields, while all the others will likely die out eventually and be hardly used while the cycle repeats for them. IRC is also lighter, easier to use (in my opinion: I seem to get along with command-line things while a lot of people I know don't), supports freedom (because of the fact you can have your own client, and everything is decentralised), is good for privacy and... well it just works, and doesn't need any fancy shit to be good. I'm not criticising Nicole for saying this, by the way, with this thread, if it came across that way. She's too nice ^.^ It's just that that quote from the signature inspircd me to write this thread and share my thoughts about IRC from a younger person's POV. And yes, I left that typo in the last sentence on purpose, although I didn't make the typo on purpose xD ____________________ Good riddance! |

This appears...surprisingly serious and insightful. Are you sure you're in the right forum?
While I don't know the context, I have to assume that she's referring to the general population, and the fact that IRC as a primary means for text based communication is on the downturn. Still, it's nice to see exceptions to the rule. |

♥10197 ✿4705 ★50 I mean, that wasn't entirely a serious comment
IRC is a good example of how internet technology used to work; people would propose standards that anyone could implement. It's a niche today, but when has it ever not been a niche? Like, even when chat rooms were more mainstream it was usually stuff like the AOL chatrooms. I think a thing that's killing IRC these days is mobile; mobile IRC on the same convenient level of say, Discord, is a much more complicated experience because of the ways bouncers and clients have traditionally been designed, and how the server handles state. And the reputation is that younger people prefer to do most of their computing on phones rather than desktops... command lines are nice as long as you're not typing it in using a touch keyboard. |

Heh to this day I still struggle with the keyboard on my Galaxy S7 Don't really go on IRC from a phone though, typically just desktops and laptops "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

I love the fact that now there is an entire thread based on some IRC quote taken out of context in my signature. Truthfully the only reason I included Nicole's thing was that I found the irony funny of her saying that in reference to me and me quoting it. Maybe I should start snooping the IRC for some new material.
Also I will happily bash mobile phone touchscreen keyboards all fucking day, I will never be able to type well with them. What's wrong with a physical keyboard, do you really need that much space? If you wanted size and space don't use a portable device for fuck's sake. And trying to select specific pieces of text and copying and pasting it is always a fucking nightmare on phones. It always baffles me when I see people out in public typing really fast on their touchscreen keyboards, as fast as you would on a physical keyboard even. Then again I'm well aware most mobile phones are designed to appeal to the general consumer market more than anything so I guess I can't complain, and it would be too late to do that now anyway since physical keyboards on mobile devices would look dated to most. Alright that's enough bitching out of me. ____________________ Giant Paratroopa Affected by 'Wooster Syndrome' ++++!! Handsome Gentleman 7/23/18 |

Actually, I find this whole thread rather comforting. I'm seeing the tech I grew up with when I was a teenager sticking around in a different way (kinda like Acmlmboards themselves). It's kinda neat. |

@Nicole: Yeah... now everything big is done by corporates which saddens me... While iirc there aren't any good clients for Android, one extremely good iOS client is Mutter, which is free and available on the App Store, it's actually extremely nice to use (supports bouncers, external image uploading, image previews, automatic NickServ identification...) And I agree, command lines are a pain on touch keyboards because of the nature of making typos and things.
@Danika: I struggle with my phone's keyboard because the screen isn't that sensitive. I jumped from an iPhone 5c to an SE and the responsiveness of the screen is horrible in comparison. However I mentioned Mutter above which is a good client. @AtomicAstro: I made this thread because the quote inspired me to give me an idea to talk about. But yeah, it is quite funny that happened @Robbie Rage: AcmlmBoards were always a niche but IRC was once massive, AcmlmBoard is hardly known outside of ROM hacking cultures, lol. Like how IRC is barely known to modern day people outside of technology/open source cultures, it seems these days. But yeah, it's nice that things like this are still around. ____________________ Good riddance! |

♥10204 ✿4705 ★50 I mean, I used to have Colloquy on my iPhone for IRC hooked up with my bouncer, but it was still a rougher experience than I'd like-- I had to log in, the whole backlog would show up without it being obvious which were new (the other option would be to not have the ones that were old, which made it harder to do a quick check as message would be lost forever)... the Discord mobile experience is much cleaner. I could take a look at Mutter, though... |

I can second the mobile IRC thing. I tried the same thing with my Android device, but it just didn't feel as slick and modular as Discord. Especially considering the Kafuka channel syncs with IRC anyway, there's not much reason for me to go back now. |

Might consider joining the Discord channel as well, and probably stay in both (I use IRC mostly still... I'm gonna miss AIM though ) "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

Posted by Danika Do it! If you're on Discord already, you might as well, consider how often you're here anyway. |
