It's an interesting genre.. You've got realistic simulations and lesser realistic ones.

I personally stick to the lesser realistic ones. The Sims 3 comes to mind (due to wasting an entire day playing it) >_>

Anyone else play anything that falls under this genre?

SimCity 4. You can really spend whole weeks in there. Add plugins and it becomes... whoa.

Plugins/addons/expansions.. All really boost the length of anything.

Just spent some free points given to me for registering my copy of The Sims 3. There goes part of my social life again.

Oh Sims. I had the original one and a whole bunch of expansion packs. It was pretty fun but social life was too difficult to handle for me (just like in real life lol).

I still like the first Sims best, you can make a lot of fun in that one without having to worry too much about emotions and fears.

Sims 2 and 3 are more realistic in psychology, but that destroys the fun for me :(

I love over-the-top sims of Sims 3. They're interesting.. to say the least.

OpenTTD hands down is my favorite simulator, but Simcity 4 is close to that. Wish that more people pickd up openTTD and Simcity 4 (A lot of people ignore anything beyond Simcity 2000 sadly).

Thought I always been weak for the sim games, sadly only The sims have been decently. Otherwise after Simcity 4, anything else with sim in have been shit. :( Spore was a disappointment.

Kiyoshi: I played the original The sims out of nostalagia recently, but the lack of customization bugs. I really like the personality system in The sims 3 since it's less... statbased. I love to put on funny flaws. :p

OpenTTD and Simcity 4 have depth. The sims is not really as deep but makes it up for the insane customization that I yet have to see in other games. There are some roleplaying games that tries, but they all fall short compared to The sims.

I remember playing The Sims.

MomSim fell asleep on the front lawn at 3AM while visiting with a neighbor.

DadSim could never cook burgers without starting a fire.

And KidSim could never get out of the shower without breaking the fucking water pipes and flooding the bathroom AND the hallway.

I never really played the original version of The Sims. I've been exposed to a console version (Original Xbox, I believe) of it however.

Played The Sims 2, with practically almost all official add-ons. A handful of third party mods on top.. Kinda felt repetitive how almost every Sim was the same.

I've played a bit of The Sims 3, and I do so like simulation games, or non-simulation games with sim aspects more so. In fact, I keep trying to sneak sim aspects into my own designs.

Does Civilization count? If so, days... DAYS have been wasted playing those games. All five. With mods, no less. Add Fall from Heaven 2 to Civ 4 and you instantly get 100+ hours of play time out of the game. Then you get tired for a bit, and return in a month.

Does Civilization count?

Looks like sources state it to be a "turn based strategy" rather than falling in the "simulation" genre. :/

Yeah. It's more of a strategy game than a simulation game (ruling an empire is NOTHING like that) but eh. It's still addictive.

I. LOVE. Sim City 2000. 3000 is great, Classic is alright, 4 is.... okay I guess, but my favorite has been and probably always will be 2000. I play SO many different types of simulation games, Tycoon games, Sim games, you name it.

Simcity 4 with Rush hour is the best version seriously. :p Simcity 3000 is way too easy, and Simcity 2000 lacks the depth that Simcity 4 have (I love the traffic simulation). But you need the expansion pack or the deluxe edition for the best experience (if you buy the game today you get the deluxe edition anyway). People seem to have trouble getting into Simcity 4 since it's the hardest one (but as long you're careful and waits with public services until they're needed rather than building them haphazardly, you do fine).

Genres tend to spill into each other, so Civilization does have quite a few elements typical to simulation games. But it's still mostly about turnbased strategy, although it originally was designed with realtime in mind, somewhat like Simcity. Just turned out making the game turnbased was more fun.

Yeah I think a reason I couldn't get into 4 is cause I'm SHIT at the series. I dunno how to actually HAVE an income, I dunno how to have high quality buildings, I dunno how to do ANY of that stuff. The only way I ever made an all map sprawling city in 3000 is cause I abused the budget. On Christmas each year, I made the tax rate 20% to net a few thousand dollars, then brought it to 1% for the rest of the year. People left and came back around the 1st every year. It was actually kinda funny.

Yes, SC4 is notorious for being really hard to get into if you don't know what you're doing. The overly helpful advisors don't really help.

In reality all you need at the beginning is power, people and jobs, but most people don't get that.

I've tried playing games like Sim Earth and Sim Town, but I just couldn't get into them...

Simulators aren't really my thing, even though I do try to give them a chance.

A way for newbies to play the game is to create a ghetto on purpose, that is building and zoning a city with just roads, zones, water and power and nothing else. Money is no problem, and then you fix the problems afterwards.

Plus there is a certain charm with a polluted and crime-ridden city with zero education. :p Although poor areas like that tend to have a low average age, so you schools might wind up being overloaded by the time when you build them. I usually find that the schools that was full at the beginning of the game barely uses 10% of their capacity much later in the game. Actually the only service you should probably worry about providing in the beginning is education, and start with elementary schools. And only fund "enough" to service the capacity used or else you're burning money.

If you keep education good enough you will get clean hightech industry. The geeks does not like being next to stinky chemical factories though. I find it easiest to just put a new industrial area for hightech industries elsewhere, they get along well with residential areas surprisingly well. High landvalue scares dirty industry away and manufacturing to a certain extent.

The game isn't balanced with industry fully though. Since the high density industries aren't as dense as commerical or residental buildings, you find yourself covering wast swaths of land with industry in lategame. At that point it's clean industry for the most part but it gets ridiculous turning half the city into silicon valley. Mods that increases industry capacity (at least for high-tech) is well-recomended.

The best part with simcity 4 is it's highly active modding community. Look up NAM at least.

Yeah, just building up your own personal Dhaka or Lagos works surprisingly well. And I noticed that the schools which were full at the beginning turn empty later on, I blame it on people getting older as health improves (demographic change anyone?)

High-tech industry likes everything residents would like too. I agree, though, that the capacity of the industries in total is imbalanced. Not necessarily too low (I mean, why do you need 7 workers for just a testing ground?), but horribly imbalanced.
