There are people that still use IRC. I refuse to use Discord because my parents banned its use (among other reasons), and people like Staple don’t want to use it either.

Though obviously most people probably go on the Discord, it’s nice to have freedom of client choice, freedom of usage (to an extent) and a thing that won’t go down if Discord goes down for some time or permanently.

There is literally no reason to take it down, regarding Emuz’s 4th option. Plus IRC is accessible practically everywhere that has an Internet connection unless stupid firewalls.

I don’t mind the other options - and what are others’ thoughts?

IRC should definitely be kept. Discord is convenient for some, but the thing about IRC is, it's practically universal.
There's no Discord client for Windows 9x, none for Plan 9, and certainly not one on the DS. However, all of these platforms have some way of connecting through IRC.

Another thing about Discord is that it is proprietary and hosted completely in the "cloud."

You can use Discord through a browser in XP, as a matter of fact an up-to-date one. There's a fork of Pale Moon for XP known as New Moon, and it's compatible with Discord.

Discord uses some rather bloated code though. IRC runs better on machines with less RAM and/or slower CPUs.

A PC like mine won't feel much, but I managed to lag a bunch of you with a css bomb.

That's fine, as long as we can have both. Discord's code may not be great but it's something a ton of people use to communicate and it's pretty easy to use.

There is a middle ground. There is a discord client called ripcord that runs about as thin as IRC. It's an option for those who would like to run discord but don't want to run an HTML5 fueled client.

IRC isn't going anywhere.. Discord and IRC are bridged so at the very least you can always choose which works for you best and talk together.

Discord is really cool but I can only expect it will invade our privacy at an increasing rate as the world's paranoids demand more monitoring of chats to prevent "terror" at the cost of our freedom..

IRC is like longwave, it works and is pretty robust though bare of features.
