so yea ive been thinking abt it for awhile now, cuz im sick and have a lot of disorders n stuff, but ppl seem to get bristled if i ever mention it. maybe its unethical and i should suck it up and go work as a janitor but i have nausea every day and chronic fatigue among a laundry list of mental disorders and it just sucks to be alive, is what i think to myself sometimes.

thoughts?

From what I understand, there is nothing unethical about using government assistance programs themselves, that's what they're for. It looks like they screen for eligibility too, so if you're fully honest and truthful about your health and circumstance, the decision will likely be made for you based on your level of need. The only unethical thing I can see is if you purposefully lie or exaggerate your symptoms or symptoms to gain support.

As for the "bristled" feeling you noticed in people, has anyone mentioned the reasons why? Are the people you speak to wary of those who deliberately abuse the system, or is something else up?

I see. While it may be relatively rare for someone your age to be dealing with so much or be disabled in some way, it's not unheard of, not by a long shot.

I say leave it up to the government. If you are completely truthful in the screening process and deem you legally eligible for benefits, then I see no problem in accepting them. Perhaps some people will see it as validation for your condition, and not "all in your head", or however others put it. There appears to be an online form to check right here.

i'm no legal expert but it doesn't sound unethical to me, especially if you think it seriously affects your life to the point that you'd need it

those people don't sound like medical experts to me and you shouldn't listen to them

i mean, what else am i going to do? i can't hold a job because i "go crazy," and stop showing up. not to mention the chronic fatigue and other symptoms i have because of pots. i could spend 2-3 months trying to work, and repeating the cycle, and losing my job all over again, but i don't really see the point

i self-harm and kinda hear voices and hallucinate and don't feel rested unless i have 13 or so hours of sleep and im just a wreck, keeping my room clean is hard enough, and ive tried self help and everything, therapy, there is no cure, the core idea is that im mentally ill and im physically ill and the conditions are chronic and all i can do is submit to that

It sounds like you're unable to work to me? Though I'm not a doctor.

One thing I've heard about SSI is that they pretty much always reject you the first time and you have to appeal; I guess it's to weed out people who are faking it? The whole process seems like a huge pain to me, but if you literally can't work, well, that's what it's there for...

someone i was in discord with told me they knew some schizophrenic janitors that were their coworkers, so sometimes i get to thinking that i don't really have an excuse. i'm not sure. i might try to work but i have some anxiety about it. people have told me there are programs that try to get you working again and that might be something worth looking into. i've been kinda sad over it for awhile, cuz i wanted to be a programmer but i'm off in la-la land and can really only summon enough focus to click play on my music player or endlessly scroll the web. my dad has bipolar or possibly schizoaffective and hears voices through the walls and i'm 24 and it's kinda starting to happen to me a bit, albeit to a lesser severity.

the fear, and the reason for trying for ssi is i'm afraid about losing a job to the disorders. because i've lost every job i've had to mental breakdowns, and i'm just afraid of wasting my time, and their time too. for awhile i was all pissed off and "didn't want" to work, but now i'm starting to feel like a useless sack of flour that flops around all day and i really need to do something even if it's wiping tables or whatever. just don't know if it's possible. i know some c# but college is pretty much off the table, because of my personality disorder, and adhd, and autism, and this, and that, and so on, and so forth. there are dozens of them i could list off.

anyway. as you can see i'm a few quarts low in the coherency dept. thanks for the input and whatnot. i'm still kinda anxiously debating it but i appreciate that the people i have asked seem to be alright with it if you really are ill.

as staying employed is impossible for me considering my c-ptsd and anxiety disorder and stuff, i'm looking into getting ssi too. i am also getting a lukewarm response about this from literally everyone in my life, nobody thinks it's a good idea. i say fuck them

let's turn things in a different perspective.

know what's unethical? letting people starve in the streets because they're out of a job. we humans live as a society, we can and have to do better. (did you know that 1/3 of the world's food production goes to waste? now you know. same goes for housing -- this is not a question of means)

besides, there have been universal-income type experiments, and these have shown to have little to no effect on employment rates. they have also shown to help people's wellbeing, but all these shitbag politicians care about is employment rates, so... yeah.

I'm all for working when it comes to putting my skill and will at the service of my community. but when it comes to working for the sake of working, only because not doing so will get you starving in the streets? fuck that shit.

You need a legal aid lawyer to help you, and you're gonna need papers from a therapist and a psych, get evaluated etc. You'll have a better chance of getting it with the lawyer who's specialty with the SSI cases.

kind of an infinite loop because i can't fucking work in the first place

since then I applied once or twice, got denied once or twice. the usual process for everyone.

it's hard enough to get the motivation to get a therapist and a lawyer. but who's fault is that <_<

guess le funny capital world has taught me, yeah, things are usually my own problem.
