I typically use Notepad, but I have Programmer's Notepad for when I want to tinker with some code and Open Office if I need text formatting. |

OS X: Sublime Text 2 - really nice syntax highlighting and good function referencing. Also supports session saving and function collapsing. (vim and joe on the command line as well)
Win: Notepad++ - pretty much the same thing as Sublime in the reason I use it. X11: I really don't have one, I use a cli editor usually Possibly gedit if copy/paste is being fickle. I think if I used an OS with X11 natively again I'd give the gtk version of vim a try. Unix CLI: Vim - I used to be against the VI based editors, but recently I started using VIM in a Linux admin class and the power of it's syntax coloring started me to give it more a shot. I am far from a "vi ninja" but it's replaced my main cli editor. CLI Alt: joe - it's a very powerful dos-eque editor that has most of the features of vim. It's an easier learning cure. I still use often. The Dynamic Profile Administrator™"Never Knows Best" Note: if you can see this my layout broke. ALL THE CREDITS WILL BE REVEALED!! 'Victory Noriko' by @thatsheepagain. I prefer Notepad, but I'll use Wordpad too. Notepad more generally for css and all. |

Posted by Trapster Is that so? Wow, that is pretty terrible. I know many people who use Wordpad for their Word documents because they don't have Office, and this would completely screw them over. |

LibreOffice is another full word processor/office suite (actually it's another version of open office) as well. I think this version gets the more up to date stuff. I do use Word at work as well as the rest of office being a MS University. I tend to keep it plain text for my stuff most of the time. ♥1630 ✿4467 ★2 I use LibreOffice on my Mac when I need to do fancy word-processor or Excel-type things... the only issue I run into is some things require Java, which I have a paranoid fear of... Apparently the team is working on that though. |

Sublime Text 2 , for both Windows and OS X.
For a ton of reasons.. it does everything Notepad++ did for me and much more, it's cross platform and in a way that it feels native on both platforms. Great plugin system. It looks nice, but is not bloated and not overwhelming.. Uses the TextMate syntax files, and it isn't too hard to come up with a custom one at all. Oh, did I say that it's awesome? On Office applications.. I can't use any spreadsheet program except Excel because my muscle memory is ingrained into it, any slight variation of behavior throws me off.. |

I use Notepad++ versus Notpad because I like the Syntax Highlighting and I'm used to it. Although long ago back in 2002-2007 I did just stick to Notpad because I was very lazy.
Then again, I didn't have much use for it back then. Haha. I suppose this "comfort zone" is why I stick to Windows as much as I do. |

For plaintext, I tend to use Notepad++ because it has a ton of useful features, such as dual columns and tabbed windows
For word processing and spreadsheets, LibreOffice is where it's at "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

On linux, I generally use gedit. It's tiny, but does everything I want from it.
I'm also fond of nano for terminal shenanigans. I don't see any huge advantage in learning vim, and it would probably be messed up by colemak anyway. The little time I spend on Windows, I'll use Notepad++ because it does syntax highlighting and tabs. For documents or spreadsheets, I'll generally go for Google Docs. I especially like how simple it is to set up collaboration. |
