This has come up during on IRC a few times, so I figure that maybe a proper discussion thread is in order!

As you may or may not know Windows 8 is going to deviate from the previous versions of Windows. They will be introducing Metro, a new interface environment entirely separate from 'classic' Windows. Microsoft is betting on this new style of interface as not only a desktop, but a tablet interface to try and get an advantage over iOS and Android.

The classic side did get some improvements by the addition of better multi monitor support and an explorer ribbon (some won't like that).. but the start menu is gone, and the functions around it are replaced with the default metro screen.

So what is everyone's thoughts on it? Do you like it? Do you hate it? What do you think they need to do to make it better?

It should be interesting to hear what people's thoughts are!

As long as there's a semblance of the Classic GUI, I won't care too much either way. I don't like how the Metro GUI looks or how it appears to operate, though.

As for the loss of the Start menu, I don't really mind, since I never use the Start aside to get to things I pinned there as a shortcut that I didn't want on my desktop.

I've seen the current beta of it on my dad's other laptop and it brought a few worries to rest but I'm still not too sure. I'm more than likely not going to use the Metro part of the OS. I rarely used the start menu so that change is more likely to make me not use it at all.

Also the windows key on the keyboard has more use now since that apparently is the only way to bring it up or leave the Metro screen. Though keyboards that don't have it can still go to the bottom right corner and bring it up. Otherwise you are short out of luck unless there's something else I'm unaware of.

I do like how the OS is having more control over processes and not letting programs do whatever the heck they want with memory. Or something like that if I remember correctly.

That part about more control is only for Metro apps, I think.

I've used it for a while off-and-on. I've found that I tend to stick soley in the classic desktop. I use the Metro interface almost completely as a start menu. Part of this is no real apps for Metro exist. The ones that are provided or only 'meh' level of stability.

Microsoft has to 'WOW!' the public on Metro in order for it to solidify. It seems they are really putting all their bets on it...

Classic side I like the improvements to it. Mostly as a multi-monitor person I found the support much nicer and actually made it pleasant. (I don't know how many people here use more than one monitor)

Isn't Windows 8 mostly a tables OS, anyway? Windows 7 is working fine and it isn't even that old yet.

I like to use my TV as a second monitor so I can drag movies and the likes over there.

I think some of the arguments for the Metro Start Screen make a lot of sense, but it does seem like a bit of a design jump between the two "worlds"... (RTM is supposed to feature some changes to the desktop that make it look a little more "Metro-y" and eliminate the trappings of Aero- those are also controversial, but I like them)

Sometimes the assumption from Microsoft seems to be that Metro will replace the Desktop for all purposes eventually, and the Desktop is a legacy mode (like the command prompt or something)- but Metro still seems far too limited for that purpose... (I mean, only two programs allowed on-screen at once, and one has to be in limited "snap" mode) Though I imagine Windows 9 or whatever will continue to expand Metro... I imagine what we'll have eventually will be akin to a (more limited) tiling window manager or something.

With Windows 7 I feel just fine, but I might attempt to try Windows 8 at some point in time. I don't know what it's about or anything, I don't have much experience with anything older or newer than Windows XP. However 7 is rather easy to use. But honestly I think here after it will always be "Windows 8/9/10/11" .etc just because they are lazy or just want it to be numerical...IMO

Well, I must say that they're taking the right approach with Metro... For a tablet and maybe a phone. Not for a desktop.

Some of the things they're doing in Metro, for example that you have to drag windows/apps to the bottom of the screen to close them makes perfect sense on a tablet. But I don't see how this can make sense in a desktop OS.

Having both the classic desktop and Metro at the same time is weird too. What I mainly don't like is the inconsistency. Metro is all, well, Metro-style, while the desktop still looks half Aero. Metro and regular UIs seem to also generally be laid out very differently, causing even more inconsistency.

So, for a tablet I can definitely see Windows 8 working well (if they don't have the desktop side of it, that is. That'd just be weird on a tablet), but I really can't see it working out on a desktop.

They actually are going to have desktop on Win RT if things remain the same from what I've read. No x86 apps will run of course, and they won't let you build a new desktop applications for it as well. The only known app is the ARM version of Office 2012, and of course file management? Playing with Windows 8 there really isn't a full file management system for metro as it is.

I tried it, for one whole day, my final verdict: What a shitty horrible tedious operating system for a desktop or laptop...
Most certainly not going to use this in any way without a very good reason...

Wait, so independent developers can't make Windows 8 programs? O_O

I think the tablet UI is awkward enough on a tablet, but since it's not my main computer it's no biggie there. On my computer I tend to multitask a lot of programs and often like having several visible on the same screen, etc.

Hey, there is still a possibility they could attempt to upgrade and upgrade and add something new or fix flaws of W8.

Just desktop programs for the ARM version... which is still odd given that the desktop is there...

Still, that sucks. Money-making corporations don't have the only programmers in the world ^_~

What type of program is not a desktop program?

I'm not too impressed with Windows 8 from the first preview.

I was expecting it to be more touch-friendly based off the "tablet" designs.. Yet, I couldn't get it to accept my touchscreen. >_>

I'm gonna be sticking with Windows 7 for a while longer.

I think Windows 8 will not make its way on my computer.

First thought I had when seeing it is, wait what, will that thing try to turn my desktop computer into a tablet? Fuck no.

And now they're preventing development on anything other than ARM tablets... at this rate they could as well just drop support for x86 CPUs and call Windows 8 a concurrent to Android.

They're taking the whole loltablet trend too seriously IMO. Tablets will never replace computers. They aren't nearly as powerful and flexible.
