Of course it's fun for those who /can/ stream to stream live. But really, what difference does it make for those who can't? (I guess the only one being that a user can race a /bunch/ of times and only submit their best run. That puts those who stream on unequal grounds, I suppose.)

That's a point. I doubt I'd have much success in streaming personally. I'd likely lose connection or anything. Either that, or it'd be compressed to blurs.

Alright, I've been unbanned from the srl channel, so now at least I can help moderate the races. I will submit my movie files, for the sake of doing so, but I will not count my runs official/valid until I can stream. I can be present in the race channel for the sake of moderating/logging but will not be able to enter unless I can start streaming.

Got more than I'd hoped for taxes, so hopefully i'll be able to stream fairly soon.

My ability to stream is due to when, and such. I think I will sit out the first few races and watch how everything goes. (I need to get streaming and such setup first myself)

So what we need is to compose a guide, and our time tables :D

The guide should cover:
-a recommended emulator set
-how to stream
-Speedrunslive info and sign up location
-The rules and guidelines for our match.

Did I miss anything?

The Post

I'm actually not going to upload my videos at the moment, since they're way too friggin' big for Youtube to upload them in any sensible timeframe.

I don't think you missed anything for the guide, Emuz.

I think the rules/guidelines we'd like to apply should be developed some more, especially if this is to turn into a Kafuka event.

The rules for our setup should closely mimic SpeedRunsLive's FAQ especially since we'll likely be using their timekeeping medium. That being said, the recap for the main rules and guidelines are as follows:

- No emulator assist-tools whatsoever.
- Game must run at a 100% speed.
- Game version must be the same as everyone else's. (SNES SMB3 and NES SMB3 are similar enough to be an exception)
- Glitch usage must be specified before match (note: no specifications means you can use whatever glitches you want)
- Specify your goal. (any% means get to the end of the game any way you can. Example: any% warpless for SMB3 means "complete the game without warp whistles. 100% means complete all levels.)
- Cheat codes may be used ONLY if it is specified in the goal.

I'd really like to emphasize the need to have people stream their runs, only because of the uncertain circumstances associated with those who complete their runs in a manner that isn't easily verifiable with the public. A way to compete without streaming is still being discussed. One method is that you must record an emulator movie file (so we can tell if you used savestates or not) and also render a movie file for upload to YouTube. You must also be present on the SpeedRunsLive race channel where you can be accounted for by the bot, so we have a time for you. That way, if there's any suspicion of cheating, we can check your time against the video file you rendered and we can check the actual emulator movie file you recorded. You cannot submit any runs that have not been recorded by the combination of: 1) the bot accounting for your entry; 2) emulator movie file; and 3) YouTube video file. This means that you can't pre-record your runs and just submit your best one because the SRL bot wouldn't have a time for you.

That post really isn't that big. What are you referring to then? The link? That's not that bad either.

-a recommended emulator set

- NES: Nestopia, FCEUX
- SNES: Snes9x (1.51 and up), snesgt (but I use bsnes >_>)
- Genesis: Kega Fusion, maybe Regen or Gens
I've rarely raced games on other consoles yet, but I could list them later too ...

-how to stream

Most use XSplit (I haven't tried it but it can do multiple screen captures, use video devices, and should be easy to use) and stream on twitch.tv.

My own setup is a bit more complicated, though :) (and I use Flash Media Encoder)

I stream in 600x448 30fps 500kbps H.264 + 64kbps MP3 (at least for all consoles in 4:3 and 240p/480i), which gives good quality most of the time, but you can go lower if your CPU or bandwidth isn't good enough :P

Speedrunslive info and sign up location

http://speedrunslive.com/

It's all explained in the FAQ there, but you just need to connect to irc.speeddemosarchive.com and join #speedrunslive, set your IRC nick to whatever name you want to use in races (and /ns register), and use the bot commands (listed on the main page).

What kind of ine and internet connection do you have? I'd like to be able to get a computer that has enough oomph to do all that processing. I have a USB capture card (Gamebridge) to grab video from. I have several systems, but I'd also like to be able to use emulators to do all that as well. So, when the time comes, I'll probably be pestering you, Acmlm, to get me started. I've already fiddled with some of the programs (Xsplit) and FME. Hopefully all goes well and I can finally participate. :D

I think we should do a game this weekend. :) Especially as I want to test out a stream setup, should be fun to keep track of other streams and probably have the stream of the leader on my other monitor. ;)

Edit: I set up my streaming set up now. I'm waiting for the race to start. Xsplit with twitch.tv works wonderfully, although i might try out other streaming solutions later.

You did do a game this weekend.. and it looked like fun! I need to see what I can do with my laptop so I can join in. I am usually away from my Desktop on the weekends (which I should setup as well.) Once I get time It'll be possible :)

Yup, Super Mario Bros. 3 in 01:14:58. Still quite some room for improvement, especially when you consider that people manage to do it in less than a hour... and hopefully maybe i would be able to achieve that if i keep trying.
