Do you prefer the Mario series or Sonic series overall? Talking about the games, not the characters themselves.

As for me, I grew up with the Mario series (SMB1 was one of my first non-educational video games) and could never get into Sonic, so I'm voting for Mario.

My first platform game was Alex Kidd in Miracle World but before Sonic, I mainly grew up on arcade-style games on the SMS (Space Harrier, Zillion, etc. to name a few)... we got a Genesis in 91, with Sonic 1 :) My first Mario game was Super Mario World on the SNES in 1994, so yeah, I have more history with the blue hedgehog than the red-clothed plumber ;)

I played both quite a bit but I grew up with Mario more. In addition, while a good many Sonic games went down hill (at least many people said, I haven't played them), a lot of the newer Mario games at least are playable to me. Although to be honest, I haven't bought too many of the newer ones. Most recent I'd say is SMG 1 and 2. :P

I just prefer the former for other reasons as well.

Mario for me.
When I was little, I used to have the NES with only 1 game, Super Mario Bros. 3. I used to play it a lot (and could never beat it). Then my next console was the gamecube. I never played any of the 2D sonic games. The only sonic game I have played is the battle adventure 2 in the GCN. :P

Mario, by far.

Grew up a Nintendo kid, and absolutely wrecked shit on the SNES on Allstars with my brother. I had an N64, but I could never get into SM64 as a kid, but now I can 100% it in an afternoon effortlessly.

I never had a Gamecube, but I do have a few Mario games for it (either physical disc or iso) that I can play on my Wii. Same goes for several of the Wii titles.

I think it's kinda funny how Nintendo is kinda giving Sega, specifically Tails, a shoutout with 3D Land and NSMB2 with Luigi's fox version of the Raccoon Suit.

Sonic is a disgrace and I'm not talking about the 90's sonic but the Sonic in the last decade. They at least recovered some of his reputation with Sonic Generations (although it still contains the horribad voice acting). There is nothing wrong with gimmicks if it's done well, but the problem is that Sonic Team is actually really awful at making their gimmicks work.

Even if Mario is in a lot of spinoffs, his main games are still very top notch (like the Super Mario Galaxy series). Compared to the flops that is most sonic games in the last decade.

Mario. I think I've put so many hours into SMB3 Allstars it's ridiculous.

My first Mario was SMW. I than got the free SMAS and was able to play the SMB series. (Thus explains why I am more 16 bit than 8bit).

My first Mario game however was Donkey Kong on the C64. (The level with the 'pies' actually was done right compared some home versions)

*points to Mario Sunshine*

People seem to remember all of Sonic's bad voice acting, but that game is kind of blocked out of memory. They remember it as a great Gamecube game but "Voice acting? It had voice acting? I don't remember that, you're lying."

Of course, one game with bad voice acting compared to.... five to seven? Pretty bad. Back in the day it was narmy, now it's getting a little annoying. After Secret Rings, I stopped getting Sonic games (until Generations), and I also stopped getting Mario games after Galaxy. Part of it was money issues though.

But who do I like better? I cannot for the life of me answer this question truthfully. I grew up with an NES and a Genesis. I had every single Sonic game and every single Mario game when I was 6, and I played all of them to death (although I never beat any Mario games. I beat the Sonic games though).

Both are very near and dear to my heart, and even though the new Sonic games haven't been that great, he's still got enough amazing games that I think he makes up for it, and he's starting to come back. Sooooo it's a tie.

Mario.

Sonic's great and all.. but when some of the titles require you to have some insane reflexes.. That's not gonna work.

Bullshit. What little voice acting there was was kind of okay.

Personally, I prefer Mario as well... I think there's something to be said for the relative simplicity of the basic mechanics, and also I think Mario games generally better rewarded exploration (even though Sonic games usually had more places to explore).

This isn't to say Sonic games are bad, of course.

Mario. I mean, come on, it's a plumber that saves a princess from a monster. Not to mention a monster that shoots fire and lives in a lava engulfed city. IT don't get any better than that.

Sonic has great music. But Mario has everything.

I dunno I thought it was pretty damn bad. The Pinatas were actually rather good, but everyone else? Mediocre at best. Toadsworth was also pretty good, but Peach was annoying and Baby Bowser? Uuuughhhhhh. *shivers*

Mario. It might just be because I grew up with a SNES and the first five and a half Mario games (Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3, The Lost Levels, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island), for all I know. I've never owned any Sega consoles. But when I finally did try the first couple of Sonic games on the PlayStation 2 remake, I couldn't really get into them. I didn't like the discrepancy between having the ability to go so fast and not actually being able to do so without running into things, not being able to make very precise movements. If I'd played it on a Genesis, though, a bigger problem would have been the lack of ability to save. The PS2 version, oddly, seems to have a sort of built-in savestate system, which is nice, because I hate not having save points. (That's also a big reason why I consider the SNES versions of SMB1-3 better than the original NES versions.)

One thing I will say, though, is that it's REALLY annoying when people put down fans of the other series. I haven't experienced much of that firsthand, but I've heard stories. There's nothing wrong with somebody liking different games; ehck, there's nothing wrong with somebody playing both.
