EDIT: After re-reading my text, I do realize the message came off as overly harsh and that was not my attention. Let me redo this post and hopefully my message will come across better.

I pretty much need some help creating levels for Mario Adventure 3. I'm looking for good level designers to contribute levels and ideas to my hack. In order to be a part of the project, I am asking interested members to create their best levels using vanilla SMB3 and SMB3 Workshop and save the level externally and submit it to me dahrkdaiz[@]gmail.com This will basically be a test to see how well you design levels and how creative you can be.

If you become part of the project, you'll use Reuben and design levels for Mario Adventure 3. There are some slight restrictions from an over all game design stand point (either game induced or over all project vision induced) but I don't really see it being a problem. You'll receive full credit for the levels you design (may even have the credit display in the game before the level loads!) and are only obligated to submit at least one level.

Sounds cool.
Now I dont have clear one thing, can we use Reuben to make levels, or only SMB3 workshop?

If SMB3 workshop must be used obligatory, then can we add more objects.enemies than the already existing amount of them in the level?

If I had to guess, I'd say use whatever you can but just work with what SMB3W will let you do; I wouldn't worry (too much) about size. He just wants to see your level design. Of course, DD will correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh fuck. This could give me a hell of a boost to my procrastination rank...

I'd love to try this out, but I just don't have enough time in the day to spend not doing things.

You need to use SMB3 Workshop, but you can make the level as large as you want, any level type.

While I know I can certainly not speak for anyone else, this whole thing seems a bit...

How to put it... arrogant? Maybe that's not quite the right expression for the feelings I got from reading the first post, but...

You're basically asking for, not only level designers, but skilled level designers to put down quite some effort and time to help you out on this project without letting them have any sort of creative input on the project what-so-ever.

It just boggles my mind. :S

ROM hacking is not exactly a hobby with cash payback, due to the nature of it. A lot of the pay-off for me has always been to see the creativity I put out come to light and how players interact with it. And heck, hacks does not even have to be long either, I have played SMB3 hacks that are a few sweet levels and I enjoyed that.

And while I personally don't have the time and effort to dedicate to another project right this instance; I can't really see any advantage to joining this project vs setting out on my own that outweighs the disadvantages. Of course, I mean no offence by saying this DahrkDaiz. :p

This was definitely a miscommunication on my part. My intention is to be able to be creative using what I give you. I don't want a situation where someone designs a level and says that they need the Hammer Bros. throw their hammers higher in order to fit their level design. That won't happen. However, if someone comes up with the idea of a new Bros. type that fits the theme of a particular world, I'll be all over it and code it into the game. I want ideas and creativity, but they have to fit in the vision of the hack.

Pretty much the only advantages are: getting to design levels using an expanded level design system and new enemies AND seeing your levels in a completed product. A lot of people are good level designers but lack the time to see a project to completion. By throwing in a few levels in MA3, they can work on levels as they want and see it in a final release. They'll get full credit for their designs, even have their name display before the level loads.

Well if I get time I might build something to submit. I've not worked a mario level seriously in 9 years.

Let me know if you need anything from Kafuka @DahrkDaiz. :)

Alright. Maybe ill join. Also I have to ask a couple of more things.

-Can we submit levels that require 2 areas? (like a level that needs just another area for the exit, like in 1-4 of the original game)

-Can I send you the uploaded level file somewhere via PM here? (I just dont want to use the email...)

You can use as many areas as you want and yeah, PM is fine ^_^

Another thing I have to ask...how we will link the levels with multiple areas? Should we specify which pipe/door leads to which pipe/door?
Also, apparently, I think I will need the ability to be able to place and exit anywhere on the level. Since I guess mario adventure 3 supports that, am i allowed to do levels based with that in mind, or its only allowed SMB3WS exit positioning?

Reuben does support all this, but, I want levels designed in vanilla SMB3 using Workshop for the try outs. Nothing super fancy is needed, just a single level that's fun.

Ok then. The thing is that, considering how you cant exit form anywhere, I find it kinda annoying, but its minor, since I just need to move the pipes ;)

And im trying to design a fun level, so dont worry that it will be too complex.

Would it be okay to show off a couple of screens from our levels in here? We need a bit of motivation in this thread...

I can't work with Workshop. It's too user-unfriendly.

Mostly when it comes to pipes.

This is the reason I can't do this. Pointers really bother me in Workshop, I feel I can't work it the way I want and I can't fully understand what I'm doing.

All I have to say is that its just one level. You don't have to make a whole hack out of this. I've used the old Reuben and I will tell you it's much easier. So just bite the bullet and get through this single level, it's worth it.

A couple of pointers: (Haha)
1) Use the duplicate enemy/object command a lot.
2) Keep another instance of SMB3WS running with a given level loaded so you can see what objects are what hex values and which bank they are in.
3) Beware of the pipes that ignore pointers! I've made this mistake.

Guys, if you need help with your pointer issues, I should be able to help you out fairly easily. This isn't my first time around the block when it comes to SMB3 hacking.

Don't let the clumsiness of one GUI get in the way of your chance to be part of one of DD's projects. This is an amazing opportunity and I'm not going to let it pass me by, nor should any of you. Remember, I will help you guys if I can!

Whoopsie.

At any rate, I've somehow managed to cobble together something passable.

(Dropping it publicly because a certain person might be interested.)

Ill be finishing mine soon. Work is not a problem for me now, so ill be sure to send the level this week ;)

Also I have to ask, I think I can only link 1 area, and I have 3 in total.
The first area must link to the same area and a different area too. It is possible to do this?

EDIT: well nevermind then. I will restart making another level, since now I see what its possible with SMB3.
