Every time I see a Vita, I think of Don Vito, Bam Margera's uncle. Orbis is kinda weird...

Also, fun fact: my phone autocorrects "orbis" to "penis" which is pretty much what I expect out of Sony for this upcoming generation, given how this generation has turned out.

in japan 4 and 7 are unlucky if you use the pronunciations shi (yon is preferred) and shichi (nana is preferred)
Shinu means death.. and it's centered around that..

They are talking about the PS4 now.. but I would have to backread a live blog to see what's up..

I wasn't able to watch the conference either (I had class right at 6), but read some of the articles on the phone... the key points seem to be:
1) x86
2) Sony really likes internet streaming of games now
3) Share button on the controller woo it's so exciting
4) They never actually showed what the console looked like. o_O

I'm kinda interested to see more of inFAMOUS: Second Son. I want to see how they decide to continue from inFAMOUS 2.

I did notice Zeke, so they must be going off of the good end... But how does that account for the powers since Cole sacrificed himself and all of the conduits by using the RFI to stop John.

#1 x86 eh? Oh so many hacking uses.. so little time..

#2 Control. It's all about control. Oh well their acquiring of the tech will come in handy.

#3. Um.. yay? I can share stuff now.. who needs my cellphone, computer, tablet, monkey, fridge, and dedicated facebook posting devices.. Oh well at least they know what's popular :P

#4 I saw that controller from before. (plus one shopped to say *warning rented game* or equally silly statement..

I"ll read more into it tomorrow

The bit of news reading "allow a friend to control your game if you get stuck" was fairly amusing. Imagine what'd happen if someone hijacked that.

Either that, or it'll be used as a shovelware feature for something.

I wonder how they'll be able to do it without latency ruining the whole thing.

Likely assume everyone has super fast connections and blame the connection for everything. It's what pretty much every big developer does for online play.

Yeah, but it seems like it becomes even more of an issue here, since you have residential-class connections on both ends. (and probably a hop to Sony's servers in between, too)

The whole game streaming takes the whole emulation out of the equation. Also it means being x86 we just might have a new (and expensive) toy to mod and hack.

They at least made sure to integrate all their current gen move tech so it's not left behind. However it still feels like a tack on after thought. (and we all know most gamers are controller users.) I remember the big deal over the cell processor. I think we're at a point where we're going to be living in the x86(_64) and ARM(soon to be 64 too) world. with an exception or two every 'computing device' I own is ARM or x86.. and the trend seems to be staying strong with examples like this. (sorry if you have MIPS stock)

Well, Wii U is still PowerPC, but even if it does well enough to warrant a successor I doubt Nintendo will continue to milk the GameCube architecture forever. Though I imagine IBM will be able to keep POWER going for a long time in the high-end market- they're one of the few who is big enough to keep up with Intel.

It does seem like an inevitability that consoles will be much closer to PCs... though that strategy always failed in the past (Atari 5200, original Xbox), so it'll be interesting to see what happens here. (I call the original Xbox's architecture a failure only because Microsoft seems to have saw fit to replace it)

The advantages over using other architectures over x86 is less nowadays than before, which is why you're seeing Sony moving over it to not (and same reason why Apple ditched PowerPC in favor of it, probably saving a ton of money on it at the same time). Especially the x64 instruction set is apparently quite competent I heard, but since I don't do assembly on the x86 architecture I wouldn't know for sure. ;)

Wonder if the next X-box would go back to x86 as well.

PowerPC was obviously intended for the PC market, so I find it a little funny how it hadn't been there for over a half decade now (Unless you consider workstations a kind of PC).

The one thing I've been saying about the PS4 is that it's basically just a PS3 with Chinese bootleg features and an upgraded version number.

I hate the idea of streaming games because my internet is never reliable. That also makes it impossible to let a friend borrow it or bring it over to a friends house for a party. I mean you still CAN, but if you own Super Party Blast and he owns Mega Fun Party, you're gonna have to swap out PS3s whenever you wanna play either of them and that's fucking retarded.

Sounds better than the rumors I've heard for the new Xbox though. I've heard that is has copy protection and that once you use the CD on it, you can never use it again. No more used games. Used games is also an issue with the PS3. I'm worried the video game stores will make it out alright, cause I'd think that's like their biggest market.

To be fair, this rumor also existed for the PS4- I'd be surprised to see Microsoft be so drastic.

There's little point anyway- the industry is moving towards digital distribution anyway, and once that is universal there'll be no used games anyway

I'd not be surprised if the rumour came true as a forced online pass approach. Heck, some developers already force you to have an online pass to go online.

Although, it wouldn't affect me too much. The majority of my collection of games were brought as new.. a few exceptions though.

I prefer buying used if I can help it. Really, I can't believe they'd do this to try and kill the buying used market. That's gonna hinder them a LOT. I hope.

I mean, look at the PC market that has no used games- if the publisher can imitate that, they get the PC benefit and the usual console benefit of generally lower piracy rates. I can see how it looks good for the publishers and such, but it's not great for gamers.

The PC gaming market is rapidly moving towards digital downloads, rather than retail discs. GAME now sells Steam Wallet codes, which take up quite a noticeable section of their PC gaming sections.

If a console is going to go for the no-used, it'd have to be a digital marketplace console without a disc tray.

Actually.. I could imagine Microsoft doing this, since they can just sell larger and larger hard drives. Not to mention, their "Games on Demand" on the x360 has been growing rapidly over the last year with a lot of newer titles getting added.
