As of late, I have noticed so many sites 403ing me and/or making life hell due to me having adblock enabled.

After giving up and just disabling it, I have been horrified to see what the internet has become since the first time I used adblock.

Trying to watch anime from a site I always stream from -- I encountered 12 of the same screen blocking ads across a 22 minute episode, and all the ads were the same ad!! > ^<

All the download sites cause RAM buffer issues on this netbook I'm stuck with due to at least 5 popunder windows with flash ads loading all at once. and this has even as far as caused a BSoD IIRC.

Download sites are just plain no-go, those just cause unresponsive script errors followed by crashes and RAM limit errors.

So yeah, this is a rant I had to vent SOMEWHERE because I'ts one of the most annoying things ever.

I haven't seen too much of an issue for having adblock enabled... the occasional site doesn't work (Twitter was telling me to advertise there and I was amused by it, but when I clicked their link it told me I had to disable adblock so I didn't bother) but nothing I'd consider essential...

Not surprised about the streaming sites- that's the whole business model. But yeah, the internet has really become a lot less usable...

The biggest bummer is that I used to just stream my anime due to HDD limitations, but that's kinda hard without going to options... addons... etc.

And anyway, do they think by forcing you to view said ads that you would actually click them to help fund a site forcing you into things? I think not.

It's a vicious cycle- nobody clicks on the ads, so they have to add more :P

I don't use Adblock, but Flashblock instead. I've only had an occasional site with a required and hidden flash element fail due to no way to enable it.

I think Adblock has become far too well known now. :x

Well, I will make note to try that later, and yeah, I agree.

I'd like to know how these people are detecting it too.

pff, I use the good old hosts method and haven't seen an ad in a long time. Only some websites pleading me to disable adblock because else they will die (haha, yeah right).

A small bit of searching came up with a fair few results related to using simple JavaScript checks.

Since Adblock tends to entirely remove the ad, most of them are just testing to see if the content box exists for the ads.

The only ads I dislike are the flash ones, due to a whole mix of reasons. Resource hogging, browse-by sounds, stopping the page from rendering..

No website worth using will 403 you simply for using Adblock. Find some better places to be.

That's what hosts is better at. The content box is there, the content just 404s due to being redirected to 127.0.0.1. >_>

Doesn't that mean you have to update the hosts file for every ad site that pops up?

It's not a big hassle. There are websites that do the work for you, you just need to update the file every few months. >_>

Fuck ads.

IMO, YouTube is completely unusable without ad-blocking software. I'm not going to sit through some commercial every time I watch a vid, especially if it's a short one like a song or playful kittens.

It's sad how some people look at a new technology, and all they see are dollar signs (or euro signs, or yen signs, etc.)

To be honest, I rarely see any ads on YouTube. Plus, I'm sure you can skip them after three to five seconds..

I'am not getting ads all over the time either -while using YouTube.. maybe because I just watch clips and don't sign in.. (don't have an account) Perhaps the amount of ads depends on whether you watch ''this'' clip or another, like time-uploaded, genre, many-times-watched, overall-liked/disliked etc.

Try watching a video which has 2 million or more views. Those are the most likely ones.

Also, certain uploaders agree to have ads on their videos.. but that's 'cause they can make a profit out of it.

Adblock Plus on Firefox gets rid of ads very cleanly on YouTube :P Though I remember when I used Safari I don't believe it's adblock worked there- I'm not sure what the Firefox one does differently.

Download sites that require you to turn adblock off are the same kind as survey sites. Worthless sites that aren't going to get you what you want.

I wonder how they accomplish the whole '403 if adblock enabled' thing, though. I bet it's a fake 403 made with JS...
