I think most of us know what SOPA is, and what it's about. It is Bill before the US Congress that is designed to give copyright holder more power in protecting their IP. In reality it is more in line with internet censorship in the US using DNS blacklisting, legally enforced removals from all search engines and an easier way to prosecute even the smallist of violations.

While there are holes in the way they plan to go about it, it's still going to take a lot of what makes the internet away; It's freedom. The other thing is this wouldn't just effect the US, but everyone. Some of the possible mesures discussed could lead to Root domain level blocks.

I just read an article from OSnews that says Google, Facebook, Amazon, and potentially others are plaining on shutting down/limiting their services on the day of the vote.

What do you guys think about this?

(Edit: forgot I had a placeholder "this", Replaced with SOPA and link on Wikipedia to it's article)

By "this", do you mean the article or SOPA? I have no idea what to think of SOPA, or rather how to put it in words, but I can agree with Google and such. Oughta cause quite a ruckus, but one that's easily reversible.

People on Reddit have just been attempting to boycott companies who support SOPA. There's the Android application that tells you what products are SOPA company owned, there is ByeDaddy, which helps people find domains under GoDaddy and they will spam them to get them to change their domain hosting, and a bunch of other things aimed at trying to get companies to drop support of SOPA.

I think Google/Twitter/Facebook and Amazon blackouts will alert more people to go on about SOPA, since even the non-technical people use those websites daily and, if these blackouts happen and basically tell them "SOPA will make this happen all the time", will get a much larger audience of people to go against SOPA.

I still think it's a lot of conspiracy bullshit, just like the 2012 apocalypse, Nibiru, the New World Order, Americans blew up the WTC themselves, Aspartame causes all kinds of diseases etc.

Nevertheless I like this protest video:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1w6GtwOvnWM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

If not, I am ready for the US/rest of the world netsplit, I already have the right browser :P

You think the bill isn't real? I've honestly never heard that idea before, but considering many politicians have been talkin' about it, I'll assume it's real.

I've been one of the people sending in letters to my politicians asking them to vote against it. I mean God damn, this shit is insane. But anyways, I know one guy who is/was literally going to sit there for hours upon hours on end and state people's names from a list of people who were against the bill in order to filibuster it. I was on that list :D

I guess that's a good thing :)

SOPA will take away the creativity on the web, but I highly doubt it will take away the piracy.
Remember how the DMCA would do that? How we would never be able to copy CD's and DVD's any more because of the protection and encryption?

I've always figured that legislation such as sopa will be so strongly opposed by companies on the internet that there's no way they'd get enough support and the backlash against it would be so strong it'd go nowhere.

luckily that's the case right now.

hoping for the best!

While I'll miss the freedom some places had if it passes, I imagine ideas like this one will gain a lot more traction.

The measures they're going to are extreme, I won't argue that point, but I will agree that piracy has gotten out of hand. There are people who can hardly use computers that torrent large amounts of data now, then brag about their activities in public and on social mediums such as facebook. I wouldn't mind seeing piracy pushed a bit underground again. It's gotten too easy, too widespread, and people have gotten careless because of it. If piracy would not have gained the traction and public acceptance it did in the first place, I don't think this bill would be here in its present form.

Internet censoring in the West has just started, not even in the US, but in my country :(

Luckily there are a lot of other torrent sites and proxies.

From what I've read, SOPA practically allows a copyright holder of anything a free right to close down any website they wish just on the suspicion it might be used for sharing copyrighted content.

Like that's not going to be abused. >_>

I get the feeling people pirate only because they want but cannot afford most of the time. As I see it.. A reduction in piracy'd be caused by a reduction in price in most cases.

True but for a different reason.

Piracy caused me to get in touch with more music, and it made me buy more CD's at first. Until the Sony rootkit incident.
Later I found out that with buying CD's, an artist gets about 10% of the revenue, if lucky. If you want to support an artist, buy merchandise and visit concerts.
Artists have a much larger audience thanks to piracy. It benefits artists, and most are not against it for that reason. It does however hurt the talentless moneymakers in the industry, and these crybabies want their SOPA.

Turns out the guy who authored SOPA is guilty of copyright infringement himself, go figure.

Looks like SOPA isn't going go up for a vote. Also I read that Wikipedia joined the blackout too.

I like the key point in that reference link. Points out that it isn't the end of the idea. :/

Although, I must say.. with things like DVDs being sold cheap a couple of years after a release.. I do see a lot more of those being purchased.

Maybe the copyright holders should think about that one. Disney, for one, charge insanely for their DVDs and Blu-Rays. Around 2x to 3x the cost of any others of the same disc format as I see it.

Yeah, there is both a senate version, and frankly this is something that they will continue to ram though for sometime. The immediate bill is 'on ice' but the idea is still well in play.

It's a miracle Nintendo has not attacked any AcmlmBoard (including SMWC) yet in these 11 years :P

SOPA would probably mean the end of the real ROM Hacking Boards.

Welp possibly not. It's all about the content provider. Still the scope of the bill seems that even small stuff could be 'requested down' as infringing on their Copyright, and than they request it to be pulled from the DNS pool/

It doesn't help anyone but the companies, and it could easily kill fair use.

Here is a good article on slashdot that explains the bill and what you can do if you is you wish to show support for the opposition of this bill.

Ask Slashdot: What Can You Do About SOPA and PIPA?

From what I can tell, SOPA is currently shelved, but will be brought back up in February without the DNS provisions.
