I used Mozilla since the first time it could compile. The day Netscape released the code was fun.. but on my 75mhz machine with 128MB ram.. it took all night and failed to compile. (Linux) However once the suite got more stable and bins were provided I've been with Mozilla and than Firefox after it got released.

Well some of the newer ones are now encrypting all your files and holding them hostage. Those are actually bad.

Oh wow I had no idea this was a real infection. Have you tried Malwarebytes? It works most of the time for when I have to do virus cleanup at work.
The last one I had to work on was in 3 or 4 places and would randomly geenrate filenames and use the registry to load it on login. Maybe you could examine the registry and see if you can stop it from spawning (hardly ever works.) If you can identify where the binaries are you could try using a Linux livecd and remove them.

Generally, you don't want to run programs in the %appdata% folder, considering just visiting some websites will automatically install Cryptolocker.

Indeed. I am an IT professional as an occupation. I am well aware of how bad Cryptolocker and any new strains of same can be (not in person thankfully). Sometimes even if you do pay they don't get you the decrypt key. Also what makes it bad is it will encrypt network shares, USB/external disks and the like.

I think @Gywall was referring to some of the less effective viruses/malware/"scareware w/o encryption" etc.

Indeed. The only way would be something as futile as a brute force. If we're talking a 256bit shared key.. yeah forget it. You'd have better luck rewriting the files by hand in a hex editor from memory. (100 Qualtoos to anyone who can do that!)

Ahh but if one looks closely I am a fine shade of #9b9b9b not #888888. Which is monochrome for the root admin male color. Though I knew that being mistaken for a ban would come up.

I don't have much time for hobbies for now. Work takes up the most time of course.

However my free time is usually occupied with lots of other things. (Family, friends etc)

I have to say I did enjoy it myself. I loved how the black and white Yoshi's where the only ones who could eat the pepper. I haven't looked at N64 emulation in a while, but does anything actually support it? It's been years.. I would hope
