With all this talk about modern GUIs being made of suck and bad decisions, let's take a moment to reflect on the past.

A past most of you probably never experienced.



The Apple Lisa.

Don't just open LisaWrite, friend. All that gets you is a (friendly) error message that tells you the Lisa doesn't roll that way. Instead, aim at that "LisaWrite Paper" icon and drag away from it. You now have a working copy named "LisaWrite Paper" with a timestamp appended to it. You don't want that name, naturally, so aim at the name and type away. Don't click, it doesn't work like that -- there's no "rename" mode like on the Mac that came out shortly after. Now, double click your new document to open it in LisaWrite.

Also, to copy those applications (because all I had initially was "Empty folders" -- and yes you can drag new folders from there, Clock, and Calculator) I had to select all the icons on that application's disk, then select Duplicate. The flashing icons that produced could then be dropped onto the ProFile disk. Deselecting the flashing icons would cancel the copy duplication, given a last chance warning.

Strange design decisions. Strange design decisions everywhere.
