I usually just tell people to keep the change or something if I go to high numbers like that. Change is annoying to keep track of for me, practically impossible, so I don't see any reason to get 1 cent and hold onto it.

I can say there's a real annoying customer that comes by at times. He pays in 5p coins and sometimes overloads the self-service machines to the point it reports excessive change and shuts down the cash payments.

Algebra is practical in many fields and it helps build one's number and problem-solving skills. Mathematics describes the world, and many day-to-day problems are solved with arithmetic and algebraic reasoning. I have a coupon that requires that I spend $30, and I've bought a $5 item and a $13 item, how many more dollars do I need to spend? 5 + 13 + x = 30. (Also, I'm a math tutor by trade, so if they stop teaching math I'll be out of a job )

Also, as you use math, you gain more experience and get more comfortable at numbers. I've had some students who can't place 1/2 or 3.7 on a number line. Algebra helps you use the numbers, and it involves a lot of arithmetic, so you get a sense for how numbers work.

What I don't get is why math, engineering, and science students have to take classes like "World Literature". I understand writing and composition classes, since forming sentences and paragraphs is an important skill, but why is it important to know the plot points of Pride and Prejudice?

UW student, yes. Trying to get into their graduate school to be a math teacher, and I have to make up some classes. My original degree was in Computer Science (ugh) at a school in Detroit.

Also, math's reputation doesn't help. Math is known as the "hard" subject, so students often don't try as hard thinking they won't do well, or they btrush off bad math grades with "eh, it's only that hard math stuff".

Me, I thought math was easy, and stuff like literary analysis and essay-writing was hard.
