I wouldn't be surprised if there were just one or two factories in Taiwan or China* that made all the panels for most monitors regardless of brand; just how things go these days.

So aftter the recent shake down with nintendo, love roms shutting down, being sued in under 4 months for 12 millies.

What is you're thoughts about downloading roms, dumping roms and emulation ?

Nintendo is legally in the right. I don't think anyone questions this. Morally I think copyright should be limited to 14 years, with a single 14 year extension contingent on giving a copy of the work to the Library of Congress (or preferably, an equivalent international body) for release once the copyright expires; note that even by this standard SNES games would essentially all still be copyrighted. (SMW would enter the public domain at the end of this month, though) I also think it's immoral for a company to distribute a copyrighted work on a medium which will perish before the copyright period expires; how many floppy disks will still hold their magnetism once their copyrights expire? None, essentially.

That being said, the way that the Nintendo article conflates legal emulators and illegal distribution of copyrighted ROM data is really obnoxious of them, and they should be ashamed of that.

Fun story about that; Crystal Pepsi was not sugar-free, but the Coca-Cola Company, in order to destroy its market popularity, released their own clear sugarfree soda under the "TaB" brand and heavily promoted it as a diet drink, specifically so that people would think clear sodas were horrible sugarfree drinks.

But no, Crystal Pepsi as it's sold today is basically just regular pepsi but without the caramel color, which makes it clear.

Hmm I have been thinking something similiar to this over the past year.
It really amazes me that Reggie Fils-Aimé will run after piraters and average rom users.
However he won't do anything about emulators that have some good chunk of coding from their systems.
Time well tell soon when things get more complicated with their ip related content.

The thing is, systems like the NES and the Super Nintendo (newer systems this isn't true) have no copyrighted firmware, and any relevant patents are expired; so there really isn't a case they could make there. The key point of their design was that all that logic lives on the cartridge; that's what allowed for things like the SuperFX.

The Famicom Disk System does have a copyrighted firmware (that "please set disk card" screen, and some routines to run the floppy drive), which usually you need to provide separately exactly because it would be illegal for the emulator to include it. Same for the GBA, but some GBA emulators will reimplement the ROM instead. (This is... questionably legal, since I bet Nintendo could make an argument that it's not a clean reimplementation-- but I'm not a lawyer, of course)

I'm not buying her anything for christmas, because she didn't buy me anything last year!

I should get a laser printer, I have a cheapo inkjet Canon that doesn't actually work right, last time I printed something out on it I had to go through and correct missing or broken parts with a pen.

I got the Canon as a gift, and I print so rarely it's never seemed worth the up-front cost to replace it... but yeah, once this ink cartridge dies I doubt I'll buy another
