♥13207 ✿4847 ★35 Posted by DarkWitchClaire Lineup I got with the console is Battle Heat, Last Imperial Prince, Team Innocent, Return to Zork, and Tonari no Princess Rolfee. Seems like a decent enough starter collection! But I'm not convinced pressing buttons does anything in Battle Heat, I think that game's a scam. Posted by Danika It's scary! The PC Engine is a polite machine with a proper 8-bit 6502-variant processor, and now NEC brings out this powerhouse?! It's too big to fit on my console bookshelf! (Not that there's any space left for it there anyway) At least it doesn't have polygons, though. Tried to use the Sega Saturn and nearly poked my eye out. |

♥13208 ✿4847 ★35 Posted by AtomicAstro I think the key thing to note is that things can look very different zoomed in and zoomed out; if there's an editor you're comfortable with that has a two-panel mode I'd highly recommend using that, or at least zooming in and out a lot. It's interesting that you say you find it harder; I find small sprites easier than freehand drawing, I think because it's easier to hide errors. Posted by Robbie Rage Yep; as a kid we only rented one, so it's cool to have my own now. |

♥13212 ✿4847 ★35 Posted by Danika Anything by Posted by AtomicAstro Any of the CD-i Zeldas (I've played them in emulation only), I know they're overdone but "shovelware-quality developer with a good license" is a fun combo you don't see everyday, especially with a Nintendo license. (Even Hotel Mario is at least decent in gameplay, at least by CD-i standards) For consoles, though the PC-FX is tempting (this is our best platformer! It's our only platformer) I think I'll go with the Sega 32X. Golden age of 2D gaming, but also has the side benefit that if I'm going to play through things, its library isn't full of boring FMVs, if we're doing Nicole-cosplaying-AVGN I think that'll be more fun ![]() |

♥13219 ✿4847 ★35 Posted by DarkWitchClaire So the best platformer on the PC Engine CD is Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. The best platformer on the PC-FX is Chip-chan Kick!, a Bubble Bobble clone with preteen panty shots. So, uh, yeah, I think the choice is obvious. But that's not quite fair-- Rondo of Blood is an amazing game, but you can tell it's really hobbled by the hardware. The HuC6280 is basically a combination between an overclocked 6502 and a memory mapper chip; it's comparable in processing power to a late NES game. The graphics have more colors and sprites than the NES, but like the NES, just has one background layer and can't do hardware parallax. The PC-FX has a 32-bit RISC CPU, six background layers, two sprite layers, and 24-bit color. Had they done Rondo of Blood on the FX it would've been amazing-- it would've outshown Symphony of the Night. But they didn't. NEC insisted on FMVs uber alles; a console designed by Hudson Soft ended up not even getting a Bomberman game. And third parties were few and far between. But honestly, if you asked me which I would code for-- what became Aspect Star "N" very nearly was a PC Engine CD game. (Almost certainly Super CD-ROM2) I never gave PC-FX homebrew a thought. And I'd still rather code for the PC Engine CD today. (I know the 6502, and I don't know or care to learn NEC's weirdo dead-end RISC core) So yeah, PC Engine CD. Any day of the week. The PC-FX can hang out with the Atari Jaguar and the Commodore Amiga CD32 and discuss how much wasted potential they had. |
