favorite aftermarket amiga upgrade?

My Amiga 1000 has an ACA500plus, provides a faster (though still 68000) CPU, some 68010 functionality, built-in kickstart switcher, two compact flash drives, and the ability to use Amiga 1200 CPU accelerators (though I haven't taken advantage of that yet). It's very nice, so I'll go with that.

I mean it's interesting; how would we tell? Like, what artifacts of civilization can survive 65 million years (at the earliest) and you know, an asteroid hitting them?

My guess would be that they didn't (brain sizes are probably too small?) but it's hard to know for sure.

It's funny, sometimes I think about upgrading to an OLED 4K, sometimes I think about downgrading to a big CRT. Both have better blacks than my LCD, I suppose... No content I watch on TV is in 4k; hell, for the most part the only 1080 content is the Switch, broadcast TV, and the Wii U. (broadcast TV is 1080i, and the Wii U and Switch are both often 720p, so even my TV's 1080p doesn't get much of a workout)

I'd say it's worth it for computer monitors, though-- if I didn't have the ultrawide monitor I'd probably have a 4k one instead.

Honestly I'd be more likely to suspect a hardware fault on a modern PC; the Apple ][ and C64 would probably be generating random numbers using addition and bitshifts, and if those don't work they wouldn't even boot. Modern CPUs now occasionally have built-in random number generators, and those have been known to have issues in the past.

So perhaps I've just activated "NSA mode"

Nope.

Worst battery leak was all over the back of my Sega CDX; thankfully, everything cleaned up alright and it works fine, though I haven't tried using it as a Discman since.

Aspect Legend: Aspect Star 3; it plays off of the game's major sound motif and-- okay fine complimenting my own stuff is obnoxious, fine, fine

The game over theme from Super Mario World. It's so melodramatic with the soft Rhodes piano and I love it for that. Koji Kondo was definitely having fun getting to know the SPC700.

I was going to say Phantasy Star Cave, but it seems to be down?! Horrifying, last I checked it was still even being updated.

So instead I'll say The Phantasy Star Pages, which is much more of a "time capsule" but still neat that it survives.

It's pretty ridiculous; download times are out of control and as SSDs have become mainstream you can't really assume that everyone has a few spare terabytes of spinning rust or whatever...

At least deliver your games on BD-ROM if you're going to do that, I'm sure many assets don't need to be installed (but physical media === dead, especially on PC)

Yep, I got one in the early 00's when they were super cheap and had a bunch of games. Eventually it died though; probably bad capacitors, but mine was in awful condition anyway and I have no idea where it is now.

weirdest game idea you've ever had?

Money Girl's DIY Magical Girl!, a tamagotchi-like game where you play the role of the magical girl's animal helper, choose a girl to give powers to and raise her to become good or evil depending on your choices.

But the catch is that this is actually a commentary of the modern DLC-obsessed game industry, to get anything done in-game you have to make increasingly-elaborate "in-app" payments to Money Girl, whose breasts become larger and her attitude becomes more mocking the more you give her. Rather than actually charge users, the game would present a bunch of increasingly-elaborate contracts where you promise Money Girl various things in order to get her to give you the in-app currency you need to raise your magical girl.

Oh, and this was going to be a LOWREZJAM entry, so the whole game was played in a 64x64 canvas. Finished most of the graphics, but the game coding didn't get far as I was busy at the time, trying something new (mouse control), and the jam ended. Oh well! Maybe I'll find another use for those graphics some day.
