You'd think checking the version number would make sense, but a lot of programmers stupidly try to reinvent the wheel and do their own checking. You're supposed to call GetVersionEx, but who knows what other ways one could find. MSDN's page on the OSVERSIONEX structure even has a table of what version numbers map to what Windows. For example, 7 is 6.1, so dwMajorVersion is 6 and dwMinorVersion is 1, while Server 2008 R2 is the same but with wProductType != VER_NT_WORKSTATION.

Makes me wonder what the OSVERSIONEX for 10 is...

The whole branding thing is part of why ABXD is only ever written like that.

I too would like to move away from PHP but Rails confuses and angers me. Well, so does PHP but for different reasons.

Obviously, the solution is to write a small mostly self-contained webserver in C.

I'm not even joking.

I'd probably do it in C# myself but the concept stands. Ask Chelsie about compatibility.

Fuck it, I'm gonna make a proof of concept.

Probably with flat files for storage, like the first AcmlmBoard had.

Ani puts away the video game and approaches the newcomer. "Hi, welcome to... wherever this is exactly. Drinks are at the bar over there and don't worry about the sign," it rattles off as it takes the ruined chunk of wood from Ech0 and pockets it. "I needed an excuse to be helpful and slash or productive anyway."

As Ani sits down again, it produces a small block of wood and a bronze-y colored device with a firm handgrip, apparently intent on building a new sign.

"Well no. I think there's some non-booze stuff in the left cupboard?" Ani guesses as it uses the device to cut the block of wood into a sign shape.

"I'm Aneron and I like red. This is... well, I'm not entirely sure what this place is called but it's a tavern and it's not entirely in normal space?" Ani finishes with some doubt, then returns to etching the design on the burned sign into the new one. "Just 'Ani' will do though. Mind if I don't pronounce the zero?"

"I'm from Felis," Ani reveals as it switches to another button on the device and 'colors' the sign by lightly burning it. "You probably never heard of it," it jokes, knowing full well how ridiculously self-explanatory and all that name is. "And this," indicating the device, "is my matter manipulator. Never leave home without it."

"And a towel. You seem terran to me, so where are you from?"

"And I thought I rambled," Ani jokes, then indicates the shed. "Saph's over there by the by, I think."

Ani quickly dashes out to replace the sign.

"You think that's overexcited, you should've seen me earlier," Ani half-jokes as it takes out the video game again and plays another round of whatever.

"Never thought those few levels in crafting would come in handy like that."

This is why last time I played MP, it was on a private server.

This is actually a very very good idea. But it'll only work at max efficiency if you then proceed with absolute radio silence -- don't even think of updating your Facebook account or tweeting something. Not one byte. Let your family/people you live with know that you're gonna pull this prank so they don't need to worry about you, and tell those friends you can trust to keep it a secret, but noone else. Before shutting down your computer, set Skype to "invisible" so those friends not in the know can't tell you're still logging in. Don't mute your mic, in case this can be seen with a crossed-out mic icon on the other side, but instead physically unplug it or turn the recording volume down. Either way they won't be able to hear you still living. Do not even start Steam or such, for the moment you enter a lobby of any kind they'll know you still breathe.

Keep this up for... a week or so? Should be enough time for even the hardest-assed white preteen shithead who's a hit with all the mothers to realize he's not so tough after all and buckle under the horrible knowledge of having killed another person. And when you've al the indication that he's well and truly buckled, you make like the player character in Altered Beast and WISE FWOM YOW GWAVE!

You're not entirely wrong. Although... there are good rap songs.

First attempt was a raw listener, working from what I already knew from my MUD and IRC such. This turns out to be massive wheel-reinventing. Just found out about System.Net.HttpListener which makes things much more robust.

Wordlessly, Ani produces another handheld game device from inside its clothes, connects it to its own with a thin but reasonable-length cable, turns it on, and hands it to Ech0.

Though the title screen logo is in the same unreadable script as most writings regarding Ani, it's quite clearly Tetris, or at least something closely comparable.

Ani smirks from behind its device, a competitive gleam in the least-obscured eye.
