Thanks to a certain someone on IRC for giving me the idea to this thread. What text editor do you use?
I use Textpad, which is pretty cool except for the lack of Unicode support, but I can live with that. |

Notepad.
An old classic, and still a favourite of mine. The world could always use more heroes! |

♥442 ✿4707 ★51 I use Notepad as well... TextEdit on OS X, but I don't like it very much and need to find something better. (Since TextEdit is more of a WordPad type of thing than a true Notepad) |

Posted by LilianaYup. Good old notepad.exe, as bundled with Windows.Posted by Gywall It's a fast loading program and does exactly what I want it to.. so I'm happy with it. The world could always use more heroes! |

Remember ye olde Notepad, with the 64 KB limit?
That one was pretty awful. Good thing they removed that limit in the newer versions. |

Notepad++ here, some call it bloated but the selection of features is pretty good.
Just like TextPad it is clearly an UltraEdit imitation with less features. Everything I need is there and I love the search function. I have tried TextPad as well but it felt like a very unfinished program to me, not only in Unicode support, but also in the syntax highlighting function and its selection window. In DOS days I loved IBM's E editor, which I sadly can't find screenshots of. Its OS/2 version EPM was decent. ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

Posted by LilianaI do recall a limit in the pre-XP versions of Notepad.. and horrible loading times for the XP version for fairly large files. The world could always use more heroes! |

Notepad for quick edits, Notepad++ otherwise.
I sometimes have to use NP++ for quick edits too. Especially when working on Acmlmboard PHP scripts, as some have LF-only linebreaks. Side fact: the CR-LF restriction doesn't only apply to Notepad. When doing Win32 or Winforms coding with textboxes, you find out that said restriction comes from the standard textbox control itself. ____________________ Kuribo64 - melonDS want some revolution in your coffee? |

♥449 ✿4707 ★51 Posted by Mega-Mario I have to admit, still only accepting CR-LR in 2012 is kind of lame. Though, I didn't know any of the Acmlmboard files used LF-only? Unless this is just something of the newer versions... |

Most of the code that I've touched is notepad friendly.
I can say that at least. Only one file forces me to open Wordpad instead due to a very strange behaviour.. The world could always use more heroes! |

Posted by Nicole Some files in the AB1.A2 package use LF-only. (but hey, who would want to use AB1.A2 nowadays? ) ____________________ Kuribo64 - melonDS want some revolution in your coffee? |

Actually, when looking back at typewriters this makes sense - CR moves the paper to the right so you can start a new line, and LF advances to the next line. It makes only sense that you'd usually use them together.
Unix uses only LF, and the old Mac OS uses CR alone. Windows always uses both together and won't accept anything else. |

Posted by LilianaIn times of dot-matrix and daisy-wheel printers, this was indeed very logical. Then there was the CR/LF or LF/CR debate, but it worked in both ways for these printers. Edit: makes me remember how I used this simple batch file to make printers go crazy and annoy sysadmins.
For the ones not familiar with DOS, ^L meets Ctrl+L, which is ASCII code 12, known as form feed or paper feed. Also, why is the code tag not using a monospace font? ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

Posted by Kiyoshi It is for me. There must be something wrong with your settings. But I just love your example. I never would've thought of that. On that matter, some scripts just like to print ^G, which makes the well-known beep. It annoys me to no end when this happens at night. |

I use Vim, which (for those who don't know) is a fairly different editor from your regular text editor like Notepad.
The reason I'm using Vim is actually because I couldn't find anything else for editing code that I liked on Linux, and ended up getting quite comfident with Vim, so that's what I stuck with. Also, Posted by Mega-MarioI'm guessing any file made by me or Dirbaio in ABXD would be using only LF too.Posted by Nicole |
