Regarding the Facebook comparison, is there a way to remove your like on Facebook? Because you can do that here. So if you can't unlike on Facebook, we're already better than them in a way.
Yes, there is that functionality.
I vote nay on the dislike system.

-1 will and should carry more weight than +1's for sure.

This is kinda silly, since a majority could simply troll vote down a topic which only a minority likes. >_>

Edit: Unless you propose moderation team will moderate upvotes and downvotes, which is even more silly and begs for the question of what the whole point of the system would be.

Agreed. I thought about it on the way to work. It would just screw the system up.

I haven't thought about it more on it, but it's logical for sure. Also with the new permissions system we could ban groups or individuals from the system too so it's possible.

Being able to dislike a thread can be abused too easily "I don't agree" and "I don't like this user" is probably the most famous way people abuse that option.

Wouldn't "I don't agree" be a legitimate use of a dislike button? I mean, what would it be for, then?

No thanks. I can see this being abused to no end, especially if there's some kind of outsider.

"I don't like the thread". Nothing more.
It's only fair when others can say "I like the thread". I see threads being liked that I would love to vote down.
Right now, we are shoving threads in people's faces like Facebook does. And we are not allowed to disagree, so we can't balance things out to something all of the board can agree with. This will cause some rage sooner or later.

If we are not doing a dislike button, remove the like button as well. We should be entitled to any opinion.

How are we shoving threads in peoples faces? Liking them doesn't do anything but put a number next to the title. It's still up to you to decide to read the thread or not.

I don't really get why the comparison to Facebook is made. Liking a thread is anonymous and doesn't do anything but possibly bring some attention to it. Liking on Facebook shows that you liked the post to anyone who is able to see things you do and alerts the person who made the status/photo and anyone tagged in a photo that you liked it.

The thing with liking is it just shows that people are interested in a thread. When dislikes are involved, then, depending on the circumstances, it can promote "Don't post this." or "We don't want a user posting here." (Since you could just dislike every thread a user makes).

Likes are only a positive thing, especially when it's just a number with no feature other than saying "People like this sort of thread, make more like this!". Dislikes bring drama into something that is otherwise a harmless and simple feature.

I think I am inline with how Lili~ ♥ said it. Mostly Positive while can be abused are far less often than the Negative. Plus Positive is easier to overlook or reverse if it is abused. Negatives have an inherit connotation that can go beyond a silly thread.

Also "Dislike" button just has a bad ring to it.

I just don't like having others decide for me which threads I should find good, with no way of disagreeing, just because some trolls are around.

So, dump the +1 as well.

I don't see why you interpret it as "having others decide for me which threads I should find good", versus "people noting which threads they found good".

Just because someone else likes a thread doesn't mean you should.

I really doubt, for example, that all the bronies liking the pony thread will make people who hate ponies suddenly change their opinion of it.

Pretty much actually. A vote system is useful on large sites like Slashdot/Reedit/Digg where you need some sort of user moderation system to separate the crap from the gold. Those systems tend to be unnecessary on smaller forums where a team of staff members wouldn't be overwhelmed by trolls etc.

I don't think a +1 system hurts though and can be fun to keep, just not really necessary.

I don't see why you interpret it as "having others decide for me which threads I should find bad", versus "people noting which threads they found bad".

Even the troll abuse argument is reversible.

Edit: Stop assuming disliking is always followed by bad actions. People have a right to an opinion, and likers can troll too (like spamming the entire board with ponies)

I wouldn't mind if a -1 button were added (all my threads would have -255 next to them, but I don't post very many threads anyway :P), but I don't necessarily see a problem with only having a +1 and not a -1, either. *shrugs*

As long as you can remove your plus it's balanced. The idea was, as Kawa explained it to me, to show the Staff the topics worth bringing to everyone's attention. I like the concept in that mostly only the really good threads will break say 5 or 10 and up. So it should actually do it's job well.

at least I think so..

I don't care about the +1 as long as forum does not sort threads by it. But a -1 seems rather stupid for obvious trolling reason.

But let's be perfectly clear, I don't think the +1 is needed at all. IMO it just makes it harder to sort in the forum list since it's before the thread title, and it does not really add anything for me. :/
