IRC is its own sorta medium. It's basically an online chatroom.

In our irc case, it's an online chatroom without the pervy people asking for nudes when they join.

I pretty much always install an IRC client and Firefox on all my machines, also VLC Player for my music or other media files

Winamp is better for music. And The KMPlayer is better than VLC for movie files. Aside from some newer standards like x265 and sound formats like E-AC3.
