Hm, that's not good... but, I suppose maybe it's just the "new board" enthusiasm finally wearing off?

When we started, I saw @Acmlm and @Emuz and had hopes this would be like the original AcmlmBoard, living those good times @Kawa often told me about.
But now, after 3 months, we have just 80 users. As @Trapster said, so many oldbies not appearing here, and Jul or even board2 have so much bigger user lists.
You could say, give it some time. But in the past 2 months, just 10 new users have registered, and these have written a mere 19 posts in total.

Well, the board attracted me, who hadn't been around much in the non-Jul group before then. But yeah, I don't know... the original Acmlmboard was a different time, and had a lot to attract people to it... Kafuka is still extremely obscure.

If you want the original Acmlmboard, you gotta use a time machine. Nothing will get you that back.

Spring break is over and it wasn't as relaxing as I'd have hoped. I got lots on my mind. I started going out with someone I had actually dated before about a month ago, and we broke it off last night after she had a fight with my best friend who apparently has feelings for me which caused lots of drama. I probably lost some hair and gained an ulcer due to stress, but all seems calm now. I'm also back if anyone gives a shit.

Exactly. That's 'cause ROM hacking is losing interest over time.

Games are getting more and more complex to hack. Most times it requires 3D modelling skill. And the more detailed the models are, the more effort is needed for hacks to not look sloppy.

Also, most of the kids here are spoilt brats who just want to play games with high-resolution graphics on their PS3 (the same game on a Wii is complete trash just because it's less detailed), and don't give a shit about ROM hacking. Probably it's the same in other countries, too.

OpenGL is confusing as all butterfuck.

I've got less than a week to learn this shit and write a usable interface for graphics so I can write a game for this goddamn senior project for school.

I hate this.

So true. For me once you have a filesystem I kinda think of it less as rom hacking and more like tweaking an OS (reminds me more of the stuff I used to work with from my OS hobbyist days.) It would be nice to start up a good ROM hacking project but it seems either the people who I know who would like to get into it are less on time. It's 10+ years later and so everyone from the ABI era either moved on to other things, or lost interest. It happens. There are a few people I know who want to, and plan to work on ROM hacking projects, but work usually kills the time. :(

Still it's a dying art...

Well, the board attracted me, who hadn't been around much in the non-Jul group before then. But yeah, I don't know... the original Acmlmboard was a different time, and had a lot to attract people to it... Kafuka is still extremely obscure.

The original AB was something special. It was born from ROM hacking, built on the connections that Acmlm made, and those people's connections etc. The focus was ROM hacking. A community was built from that.

Kafuka is from scratch with nothing but word of mouth. The Oldbies left for a reason, they returned for a little while, and some will come in and out.. however some just came to say hi. That's life sometimes. They did come :)

Kafuka lacks a big project itself. If people have a reason they will come and stay. The second thing is, since we don't have a project our growth is purely word of mouth. Thus if it's to grow we need to tell everyone we know about it and if we all run out of people to tell we plateau.

However that is something that can be fixed...

When I started this board project I said to BH, Ailure, and KP that I wouldn't have a lot of free time. However what I had would be dedicated to the board and the things supporting it. This is true. I am spending every bit of my free time I ca n working on the code base side. The more it's worked on the close to public release it gets, the public release than could be that project this board needs.

I am very big on the community model. I think the community as whole should shape the community not just the people running the board. In this light I think there two simple things you can do (if you haven't already):

The first one is easy. Just ask people you know to join. It's better if you have a link to a thread they might be interested in. I think by now everyone has done this, but if you haven't think about it. The community of AB1 was groups of friends that only had one small thing in common...

The second one is harder. If you have a project, consider using Kafuka for the forum that backs it. You can gain both have an instant community for your project, but you can help grow it too. Also AB2.5/Kafuka is built around the model of being able to provide both public and private forums for projects hosted. Now a lot of the time using your own forums is best so I don't know how many people will want this service, but it's something that can be offered. However one of the caveats really is the project has to be big enough to not just end up being another empty forum the board. (IE: start a thread first and contact me about it. We can talk if you are interested.)

Acmlm's Board had hundreds of users. it had 20~30 online at peak times with ranges of 65~200 posts per hour. Yup, we don't have that, but remember that was built up.. it took months and years to get that. At 3 months we get over 100 post per day on average. If/when we get more users that will go up.

You can't focus on the past. Past is the past. You can however make the future. If you want the AB1 experience you can't, BUT we can make our own version if we want. It will take effort and time. I tried almost every people I know who would even like the board, and I am working on the code, and trying to foster projects (Kawa has noxico as well as others).

Not having time is a pain I tell you what. Back in the ABI days I had soooo much free time. Now I think per day on average I have about 5 hours or so on the weekdays, and I spend most of my weekends doing errands.

So I guess that's some of what's on my mind. That and 3.1415927 now..

That's what I tried to do back then with Nikoboard. When I started SM64DS hacking, I posted there, and linked to there from my youtube videos. I have then continued doing so with my board. But it failed miserably. I already posted a thread about SM64DSe here, but uh... SM64DSe is practically getting no interest. I made it open source in the hope interest coders would help me, which would have made me regain motivation, but nope. The few people who actually care about SM64DSe just want releases and more releases.

I would do it with another project, but I have no idea what to do. As it already has been said, ROM hacking is a dying art. Trying to hack a new game will just generate interest for a few weeks and then it'll be like SM64DS hacking.

Looking into the present and future, it is hard to find stuff to make this place more active. All I see in these times is social networking and spoilt brats playing on their PS3.

Then, I could look at what I'm interested in. Electronics, but I lack tools to make really cool stuff. Programming, but I have no idea what to code that would really be worth it. And when I look at all those failed projects of mine, I kinda lose motivation...

I did some practice driving yesterday. I didn't think much of it until about an hour ago when I was driving around the forklift at work. I think I'm getting the hang of driving for the most part. I just need to work on parking and staying on the road.

Well I think the key is to focus on the older ROM Hacking stuff I think. The ROM hackers who are the most hardcore are the ones that exist from the 2000 era when it first got popular. DJ Bouche and I will get back to the Super Mario 3 Allstars super engine at some point (this is what happens when you grow up.. you work, takes up most of your time etc.) If you want to look over how the engine works and everything we could use the help as it's not a light project by any means.

We'll see if the board software gets us any traffic too. Just depends on who wants to use it. Even though I am working hard to make the inital release as easy to install as possible, it's not going to be as easy as other boards. (But we can fix that afterwards.)

Yeah loss of motivation can suck. It's hard to work thought, especially if it's just you.

@"Treilor": Yeah it's all practice. This is why I suck a driving. (I walk everywhere)
