I know there's plenty of things with age restrictions on out there. I also know most of the age requirements for products in the UK thanks to my job..
But after reading this article.. I wonder actually how well they're actually enforced. The only time I was allowed to go outside the age restriction boundaries was about a month before I turned 15 for a 15-rated game. Otherwise, my parents pretty much enforced it. What you guys make of this? The world could always use more heroes! |

I stopped reading after I saw the words "they are being left unsupervised by their parents".
They're so close to the goddamn problem and yet so far away... What's surprising is this is the UK, though. Don't they already understand what the problem is? Don't they have better parents in general? |

"She questions how to respond when one of her pupils asks her to join in a game by "stabbing a person in the back"."
Sounds like Team Fortress 2. I think violent games can work out with younger kids, if a parent is supervising. I'm surprised though, I do recall that war re-enactments have always been common in playgrounds so it's possible that the increase in "violence" is slightly exegerrated. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org, YouTube

Posted by AilureI disagree with the possiblity of it being exaggerated. I've seen some of the stuff myself, since it can extend outside just schools. It's pretty shocking to see aggressive movements almost perfect to an 18-rated game coming from a kid who looks under 10. Especially when you can recognise the game from the movements too. The world could always use more heroes! |

I think that is mostly true that children under 12 may not be developed enough, to see the differences between the real world and the game world. Especially now that game graphics looks so realistic. This was not such a point in the days of DOOM and Quake 1, when similar articles were going around.
I remember being shocked by seeing blood in a fighting game when I was 9. I find age restrictions of higher than 12+ useless. Because violent game series like GTA will be illegally copied anyway, the 18+ label makes it only more interesting to teenagers. For porn you are still carded, and in most cases you must be at least 18. Yet with so many teenage mothers nowadays, nobody blames porn? This shows what the logic error in "games make teens violent" is. Also, if I had more sex in real life, I would have no interest in porn at all. It makes me wonder if the 8 o'clock news should be censored too, as they show violence and blood in the real world. ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

Posted by KiyoshiThat's a fair point. Being able to distinguish that seems to be becoming something of a difficult task for people exposed to it from an early age. The first games I played that were "violent" were either cartoony or poor graphically, which helps with the "it's not real" mindset. Posted by KiyoshiThat's one thing I was exposed to early (thank you, rom sites) and as a result.. actually makes me feel a little sick strangely enough. The world could always use more heroes! |
