So I'm in the market for a new laptop rather soon. Problem is, it's been well over a decade since I've bought one, and that was a wimpy little netbook that was super unreliable. I usually use PCs and have a good idea of what to expect out of them. Unfortunately, I can't computer good and don't know what to look for quite as well, particularly in the realm of mobile processors.
My needs are simple: - Can fit in a $450 budget (under $400 is ideal, but not sure if that's possible). - Can handle some light streaming / multitasking. - Can run Overwatch (hopefully). Some general questions I have: - What sort of equivalent processors should I be looking for? - Any other issues to consider? Basically, if you were looking for a new laptop under the following parameters, what would you look for? |

That budget is really strict.
A little over-budget at $499, I found this for you. Laptops offer really terrible spec to price ratios. You're trading half of the specs to be portable, and then how "portable" depends on the battery's lifespan. If I may ask, why a laptop over a desktop? The world could always use more heroes! |

Posted by Epele Ultimately, the portability aspect is paramount. I'm moving to a new house later this year, and I would like to work in any room in the place (including a game room where D&D will be played!). As much as I would love to play Overwatch on PC so I can play with Kafukites or whoever else, portable productivity (and being able to easily DM in my basement) is the priority. |

You're probably not going to find a whole lot of options unless you broaden your budget to be honest.
Though, if you don't mind used. I did find this. The world could always use more heroes! |

I see. So OW may just be out, then? I can live with that.
This brings me back to my question about mobile processors. How do mobile processors scale, and what should I look for in laptops under $500? tl;dr: Best laptops under $500? |

Exactly as Trapster says, you need to be prepared to spend a bit more. (Or you'll end up settling for used/refurbished)
Browsing a different site, I found this one. It's over your budget, but you can get a double-stacked promotion currently bringing it down from a $699 full price to tidy $530.10. I've done a bit of spec research, and it has a very reasonable set of specs. The processor may be just a dual core, but it's got a lot of bite to it. Also, this one has a dedicated GeForce GTX 950M for graphics. This would certainly fill your tick box for Overwatch. It should be able to play on Medium, as it's very comparable to my GTX 750Ti desktop card, albeit the memory runs slower. (I play Overwatch on Medium, but I'm more than capable of running it on High.) Unfortunately, outside of Amazon and NewEgg, I don't really know many US retailers. If I did, I'd browse for more. I looked around a bit. if you go for Epele's recommendation (Aspire E5) make sure you don't confuse Aspire E5 and Aspire ES. the latter is less pricy ($349) but it's not a gaming laptop. ____________________ there's a link here. |

Well, here's an update on the laptop situation:
In short, my budget has basically doubled for a new laptop, so I'm starting to look at lower end gaming laptops. To that end, I'm seeing stuff like this thing and wondering if it's worth it. Furthermore, has anyone here used Solid State Drive? Has anyone ever had an issue with it? |

Posted by Robbie RageI use a solid state drive. After getting one, I honestly wish I got it sooner. It cut my boot up time from over two minutes to about just twenty seconds. From what I've gathered though, earlier SSDs perform worse than newer ones. Now for something a bit bizarre. There's actually such a thing as an External Graphics Card. These typically require a more modern connector, but can provide a huge boost if you want to use a laptop for gaming and portability. I would recommend giving this a read.
