There's been a craze on here lately to start using Emoji in posts.
This is great, fun and all. But there's a small problem. Windows 7 doesn't natively come with support for Emoji. I went out researching this, to see if there was some way to get emoji to display. It started with browsing for a browser extension, but this proved to be the wrong way to do it. I stumbled upon the fact that Emoji is mostly just Unicode, and would display if the system had support for those unicode characters. Next piece of the puzzle. I found that there is an update for windows 7. Turns out, I already had it. So why did I still have so many squares appearing? Turns out, that update only supports up to Unicode version 6 - which is most common and basic emoji, but a lot are still missing. Especially newer ones. Looking up to see if there was an update, I found that Microsoft split their Segoe UI font in two. There's a standard Segoe UI, and Segoe UI Emoji. Not having the latter installed, I went searching to see if I could find the file. I did eventually find a version of the font. A little out-dated, but it stopped most squares. Problem solved there? Not quite. Turns out, there is a newer version of the font with support for colour emoji. If you have Windows 10, you have it automatically. I actually asked someone for the file from Windows 10, to which I received it. Wasn't sure if it'd work properly on Windows 7 if I installed it. Turns out, Windows 7 actually has support for the colour emoji font. So for anyone who is having the can't see emoji issue, ask someone with Windows 10 for seguiemj.ttf. The world could always use more heroes! |

Posted by fiverI might opt not to use emoji, but other people may just decide to use them. Which is why I ran into this issue in the first place. I was seeing squares all over the place. The world could always use more heroes! |

One's choice in browser also helps, in that Opera 12 doesn't recognize Astral Plane characters no matter what fonts you have installed.
inb4 you guys tell me to stop using old browsers lol |

♥10417 ✿5218 ★49 My fairly-heavily locked down work machine (Windows 7) happens to already have the (outline-style, not color) emoji, which surprised me. |

The outline style Unicode emotes have been around since Office XP.
Also, Opera 12 is hands down my favourite browser, if only Presto was officially open sourced.. Kawa, you might like the QtWebKit (sometime to use QtWebEngine) based browser Otter. ![]() ____________________ Good riddance! |

If you're gonna try this for colour emoji, you'll need to find someone who can send you the colour version.
Basically, find someone with Windows 10. The world could always use more heroes! |

Make sure your Windows 7 is up to date. I know that if you do not activate your Windows 7 with a legitimate licence, that the SP1 update is withheld.
SP1 is also required for a lot of updates, so that could be a factor. The world could always use more heroes! |

A small update to this. Pale Moon and Firefox now come with emoji-compatible fonts as standard.
You can even install them to Windows for further support too. ![]() The world could always use more heroes! |
