This is something I've been thinking about.
Computer storage is constantly growing, and I'm wondering what different perspectives on how much storage space for data is needed for different people. Personally, I have 1TB worth of combined storage space. I don't use all of it currently, but I use a much bigger percentage in the last year than I used to. The world could always use more heroes! |

♥11427 ✿4705 ★50 I don't use much storage at all... though I doubt I could get away with 500MB with the size bloat of modern files, 320GB feels like overkill |

Heh my main machine has a 480GB SSD and 2TB HDD in it, not doing too badly here Also a ton of externals, mainly for backups, etc. (barely delete stuff but I do backup videos, music, etc. to various external HDDs and flash drives, etc.) "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

As someone who keeps an archive of my videos, I need as much storage as I can get my hands on.
I have my current video archive sitting on my 2TB disk, but I think I need to bump that up soon. |

♥11430 ✿4705 ★50 Posted by EpeleMost of the ones that have a hard drive have more than a GB, actually (Mostly because it's hard to even find smaller CF/SD cards than that, and solid state > 30 year old hard disks any day)Posted by NicolynSurely your retro computer museum doesn't require a lot of hard drive space between them? |

2TB would probably be ideal for my situation
i used to brag about how i couldn't fill my 1TB drive but i've been pretty packratty about anime and movies lately, plus i've also gotten into preservation (building archives of entire websites), so my 1TB is starting to feel a little cramped... that said i could be a lot more efficient. there's a lot of stuff i could delete if i wasn't so weirdly emotionally attached to it, so i guess i don't strictly *need* the extra TB. but it'd be nice... |

I think I only need about 500GB personally, but 1TB is a good safe margin for the next five years. I currently have a bit more than 1TB of space and I'm only using 34% of it so far. I don't really archive many things and I don't play that many games on my PC, so I don't need that much space.
My SSD has both Windows 10 and Linux Mint, and it's also where I put most of my personal documents (aside from videos) along with all programs I use. It has 75GB/223GB used. My HDD has games, emulators, ISOs/ROMs, movies, videos and other heavy downloads, including backups of my documents. It has 315GB/931GB used. There is one thing I'll say though: 20GB is seriously not a lot of space nowadays (this is how much space the Athlonic has, my "retro" spare computer). Sure, I'm able to install Debian 10 + Windows XP on it, but it doesn't leave much more than a couple of GBs for me to work with. "The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear." --Ram Dass |

I boot off Windows on my 250 GB SSD, a 1 TB HDD for most programs, and a 2 TB external drive for further storage. Most of my storage is taken up by a mixture of music, software, music software, and raw media that I hold on to.
The music folder in my external drive is 80 GB, with my dumb audiophile FLAC library as well as archived stem files from some music projects. The software folder is 120 GB, mostly Windows ISOs, VSTs, and a couple games. The raw photo/video folder is 40 GB. You can double all of these numbers for the backup drive. This seems like a lot of shit for a teenager but it's mostly because of piracy and amateur music production Oh and if we count the media server in the house then we have several terabytes of movies I'll never watch |
