Yet another poll of opinions.

More data for the Soviet Kafuka Society to extract. :)

cracking, of course. this is what they think we do when we say hacking. can't make a difference.

hacking is oldschool and straightforward, modding came along to not say hacking soo meh.

level editing it is for 2D games, though.

I voted for hacking because I will always defend the term "ROM hacking", but I think if there's any manufacturer-supported tools or modding scene then it's modding?

(Also CD-ROMs are a form of read-only memory so calling editing disk images ROM hacking is fine in my book)

You could argue that both hacking and modding are forms of editing.

In the mindset of ROM hacking, you're using third party software to edit a game using grey area legality. And I say that as a supporter of ROM hacking.

Modding tends to be the term used for editing where it's explicitly permitted.

Couldn't you also say that the "hacking scene" is also a "modding scene" using the same logic?

But there's also games where people found places to hook in mods despite not being officially supported. I've seen mods for games like Saints Row 3, which doesn't support modding.

When I modded Mario Kart Wii back in 2012, we all called it modding when we relied on apps that did the "hacking" silently for us, those who used Ocarina codes to break the game called themselves hackers but we knew them as skiddies or just cheaters.

Where you're altering code such as RAM bytes or using Assembly yes I would call that hacking, breaking new ground, it's also just reverse engineering too though.. >_> <_<

I suppose it depends on the ego, hacking just sounds edgy.

It depends.
I've always gone with the convention that you hack ROMs and almost everything else counts as mod (outside of doing things like cracking a game).

Definitely modding :P Used to like "hacking" but it has too many negative connotations ;) It's amazing what they've done with Sonic and Pokémon hacks nowadays... there were even a few for Sega CD :D

Someone who thinks alike too.

yes, it would be a disaster if our copyright-infringing hobby were associated with illegal things

Well, it depends on the console. On the SNES you take out the cartridge and insert another one to change games.

I've always seen ROM hacking as modifying the original game's ROM directly and modding as using tools to modify game files for PC games and such, but maybe that's a weird definition.

I dunno on the PC thing. Modding also exists on console games too these days.

Entrepreneurs would likely call it innovation.

Something something office space.

Entrepreneurs would likely call it innovation.

We can probably get a couple billion in VC funding if we call it ROM disruption.
