Been reading a bit of a review on the news again..
This time, on the disposal of data. It's kinda shocking on how much data can be harvested from an second-hand drive. So do you guys sell drives, give them away, or even dispose of data you don't want seen? The world could always use more heroes! |

That makes me glad I format my drives before I give them away. |

♥1110 ✿4709 ★53 I don't think I've ever sold or gotten rid of a drive I used... the closest are those hard drives which outright failed, and ended up in the hands of the Verizon I suppose. |

I got rid of two.. but that was because they were incompatible with new hardware.
Formatted both, then sold them along with the rest of my old hardware. I tend to not keep files which make me personally identifiable if possible. The world could always use more heroes! |

I have a broken hard drive. It's probably collecting dust in some dark corner. Such things aren't thrown away. |

I've got a hard drive from a computer disposed of in the middle of the woods that I really need to take a look at some day. |

Any computer I've given away I always run wipedrive/"dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdX" on it. At work what is done since they consider University HDs to have sensitive data on it is to wipe drive it, give it a pass with a high power magnet, and than drill a few holes in it. (Than it gets sent to recycle).
Just zeroing out works well enough. The Dynamic Profile Administrator™"Never Knows Best" Note: if you can see this my layout broke. ALL THE CREDITS WILL BE REVEALED!! I have about three broken hard drives. (Curse you Maxtor! Never again!) I am going to take them apart and harvest the linear actuators for laser toys and magnets for who the fuck knows what. Then I am going to take the platters and make something else from them. Some might just sandblast them which is what I thought about doing. I don't really have any info on there I want destroyed. |

Y'know. I never thought of the magnet method.. Then again, I don't actually have a magnet powerful enough.
The method of writing over and over would probably be easiest and great for being lazy. Especially considering I should still have a program capable of doing it.. The world could always use more heroes! |

Posted by KP9000 You too? Haha. Maxtor is notorious for their bad hard drive quality, it seems. Also, I know someone who has those magnets normally used for cleaning up aquariums. They should work fine for cleaning up hard drives as well. |

Posted by TreliorPlain formatting them is not enough. Filling the harddrive with random data however should be enough. Plenty of tools who can do that, and in Linux you can do it easily with a quick command (the one Emuz posted earlier). Despite that they been able to rescue data from harddrives totally broken or even underwater for weeks, apparently a single pass of random bits is enough to make the data permanently unrecoverable. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org, YouTube

I have a program that I use that actually I got at work called "WipeDrive". Basically it's a micro OS program that does everything from zeros out the drive, to a DDoD 7-Pass wipe. I've used that on any drive I've given away. I usually used the zeroing one since nothing I had was super sensitive and it would do the job anyway.
Also if I want to recycle or dispose of a drive, I usually knock it down the stairs and give it a magnetic treatment before having it scrapped.... That certainly sounds a useful program.. I can easily use a rather poor code piece I intended as a prank to do a similar job to a data-only drive.. 'cause pretty much they'd only recover a bunch of files in the end with the same old contents.. The world could always use more heroes! |

Wait...What about the Recycling bin? That can delete stuff. Plus there is the control panel, but. There are lots of programs that can do it...I'm just not sure which ones |

♥1564 ✿4709 ★53 Posted by Rydia Well, I imagine the idea is about deleting things in such a way that data can not be restored, as can happen with the recycling bin... |

Posted by NicolePosted by Rydia Well that's why you delete it and delete it again, and remove every trace of it. It's easy if ya know how |

Posted by RydiaIt's a bit more complicated than you think. Because all deleting from the recycle bin does is overwrite the first byte of data, telling the drive that the allocated space is free again. There are utilities out there that can rewrite the first byte to get the files back, assuming they haven't been overwritten yet.Posted by NicolePosted by Rydia |

Yes, exactly. If it wasn't a complex subject, I doubt it would have warranted a thread. |
