What's been your biggest computer-related problem that's been Hell to fix?

This summer, I bought a Dell. That right away should tell you how the story ends, but I got a Dell cause it had way more RAM than anything else in the store, and I needed something that was about 700 bucks to also get the 360 deal. So I bought it, and within weeks it had problems (Crashing, blue screens, turned on in the middle of the night). Finally, three months after getting it, the screen cracked. Probably my fault, as I brought it EVERYWHERE with me at college.

Nonetheless, I sent it in to Dell to be fixed, because it was obviously still under warranty. Two weeks later, I got it back. It worked for a week, then flat out turned off and refused to turn back on. No lights came on the computer, and if I COULD get it to turn on it turned off as soon as I touched it. I called Dell, they sent me ANOTHER box, and I sent it back for them to look at and fix.

They gave it back to me two weeks later. It wasn't fixed. They had a message saying "Thank you, we had our best people look at it, we fixed your fan" but as I called them, they admitted that no one looked at it and it was just sent back to my house without being fixed at all. That was a giant insult, so I was obviously getting kinda pissed. They sent someone to my HOUSE to fix it. The person they sent missed when they were supposed to be here, twice. Finally, several days later she fixed my computer by taking out the old motherboard and putting in a new one. Apparently something in it snapped off and broke, I'm not a big hardware person.

So I had a working computer again, BUT it broke two weeks later. Again. SAME PROBLEM. So I called them, again, and they sent someone out, AGAIN. He came when he was supposed to, at least, and fixed it. I didn't move the computer from where it was, but just sat there and played Civ4 for a few hours. Finally, I was gonna go back to my room when I picked it up and it broke again.

By this time, Dell basically said "fuck it" and just sent me a new computer. I guess they learned that it was costing them more money to send out people and cheap motherboards to fix it than it would be to just give me a new fucking computer. The new computer has problems too, it has weird sound problems and it crashes every now and then when the video card crashes. Nonetheless, this is the biggest problem I've ever had a computer give me. And I'm REALLY bad with computers.

SO, has anyone had an annoying problem with their computers that just couldn't go away?

I've had a laptop that melted it's own motherboard. A processor that overheated due to a fan failure.. Snapped the spacebar on a keyboard.

Nothing too big really.

I prefer my desktop tower over any laptop.

I had two hardware failures, both being PSU's whoose fan stops working.

Which usually means the computer boots fine and all, but shuts down as soon it gets warm. A couple minutes of gaming is usually enough. :/ You can replace the fan but I'm not ballsy enough to do that (those capacitors are dangerous after all).

Your story is amazing Marzen, I just hope Kawa's new Dell does not suffer the same fate...

Why do peripheral power adapters all look the same?
I once accidentally plugged my scanner's 12-volt power supply into my USB hub. All devices connected to it died, my rumblepacked gamepad sounded like an earthquake for a second and then died as well.

Wow that's crazy Marzen. Last prepackaged PC I got was an Acer and the pins popped off my CPU when the fan died on it and melted the heatsink to the actual processor via the crap-nonname-gel they put inbetween that they called thermal paste. It would turn on still after I bent all the remaining pins back but lock up randomly and send signals off into alien worlds, which resulted in swift kicking to the side of the beast.

Last time I buy a brand computer.

I had a hard drive malfunction resulting in a phantom partition somewhere. I had a shit ton of stuff on there that I wanted to get, but I couldn't recover anything off of it much less find any tools to do so at the time. I was so pissed. When I finally thought I was getting somewhere, the drive finally went completely dead and I lost everything.

I'm trying to play video games and do 3d modelling on a laptop. That's my biggest computer problem ever. Oops.

Update: Remember they sent me a brand new computer? Yeah that's broken now. The fan stopped working and the computer starts overheating very easily.

Never. EVER. EEEEEEVER. Buy a Dell.

EVER.

It's funny cos, even with all the Dell hate, this laptop can run Skyrim at reasonable settings (and it suggested the best) and hasn't failed me yet. And yes, it's a Dell.

I think my biggest problem was with some old computer motherboard I was trying to revive. All I could install was Win98, when trying to install anything else the install program would just freeze. I remember trying lots of stuff, spending days on it, all to no avail. And in the end it turned out that the BIOS was responsible for that. The motherboard was a Gigabyte motherboard with some crap Nec BIOS that was apparently buggy. Forcefully installing the latest Gigabyte BIOS fixed the issue.

It was 900 bucks, and it was the most high tech computer below 1000 dollars. All my other friends not from here also tell similar stories of Dell bullshit, so I dunno >_>

For $900 you could have gotten a really good barebone kit online and put it together yourself and never had an issue.

Golden words. The only issues I've ever had are when I've bollocked up installing something.. Which means a cable isn't fully connected most of the time.

Although, I did ruin a stick of RAM unintentionally.
