Anyone else wait until some reviews come in before buying a new electronic device like a printer or monitor? I know I was looking at a new on the market Brother color laser but decided to just buy an older HP model instead because the Brother wasn't well reviewed yet "Miracles happen, when you believe..."

I look at reviews but often I do research on the item before hand. If it turns out to be crap it's on me. (Sometimes first runs are better etc.)
I've had no problems with Brother printers. I had (have) a small desktop B&W laser that did the job. Older often can be more reliable. Age plays a factor but older equipment has a better build quality and if you are willing to put in the effort parts can be found to fix the issues.
