After 5000 posts here, more I believe than on the original Acmlm's Board, it got me thinking ahead to the future, as well as a bit of nostalgic reflection about the things I've thought about since I first started coming around these parts.
I was a kid during the age of mainstream consumer internet and the Dotcom boom. When Acmlm's first came about, it felt like the first taste of what was to come; an interconnected future where everyone had an online presence, and individuals the world over could interact with one another. Even though the rise of modern day social media and it's ills are now a daily reality for us all, it does not change the wonder I had back then, nor does it dilute the hope I have for the future in the era of smart devices and connection. The questions: What sort of ideas have you had for the internet and the future of tech? What are some of the things that bring you that sense of wonder, and what do you hope to see in the future? inb4 cyborg waifus |

This is something I think about every once in a while, and every time I just come to the same conclusion. Whatever's going to happen next will probably be something none of us can dream of at the moment, simply. Before TV, who would've arbitrarily fantasized about a box in our houses that can show us moving images with audio to tell us what's happening in the world? Before computers and the internet, who could've dreamed of a massive network on which we can find literally anything immediately and spoken to anyone in the world at a moment's notice? Before smartphones, did anyone imagine that the tech that brought us PCs could have been shrunken down into a tiny device that can be carried with us wherever we go?

I dunno about the dominated by tech giants being a bad thing. Some of them are trying to clean the web up, even though it means that it looks like the giants are picking on the smaller companies. From my experience, it's actually the smaller companies that are the worst. Demanding tracking, filthy ad tactics - such as page-jacking to make all other content on the page invisible to focus the ad and a blatant disregard for any legal obligations - such as obeying GDPR for Europeans - that they may be subject to. The world could always use more heroes! |

Posted by Epele That's an interesting thought. So many of us seem used to the idea of big corporations having no care for laws that it makes sense that the biggest ones have a vested interest in a free and open internet. |
